George Mason weathered two storms today--the rain storm that delayed the game twice and Husky pitcher
Andrew Leenhouts' fury on the mound--to snag a 5-1 win over Northeastern in 10 innings. Leenhouts was dominant, throwing eight innings, striking out 15 Patriots while allowing just two hits. The game, originally scheduled to be seven innings, was scoreless through nine before Mason capitalized on a costly throwing error in the 10th and scored five runs. The Huskies mustered five hits in the game and mounted a rally in the 10th that resulted in their only score.
Matt Miller drove in the Huskies' lone run with a sacrifice fly. He did not log any hits in the game, ending his hitting streak at seven games.
Ryan Brecko, George Mason's starting pitcher, twirled a gem of his own, stifling the Huskies' offense. He surrendered just three hits, matching Leenhouts with eight innings pitched. A.J. Johnson pitched two innings of relief, notching his first win of the season.
Tony DiCesare smacked a first-inning single, the only Huskies offense until the fourth inning when
Frank Compagnone hit a single of his own.
In the sixth inning,
Ryan Maguire legged out an infield single, creating the last of the NU offensive production until the 10th and final inning.
Leenhouts cruised through a George Mason offense that averaged over 9 runs per game. He only hit a couple of snags along the way, getting out of a bases-loaded, one out jam in the third inning and holding a runner to second base in the fifth and eighth innings.
John Puttress got the start at catcher, logging a hit and scoring the only run.
Logan Gillis also chipped in a hit, coming off the bench as a defensive replacement.
Game two of today's double header is under way.
Charly Bashara will get his first start of the 2010 season.
