Andrew Leenhouts pitched a complete game, and the Huskies exploded for six extra base hits as NU beat UNC Wilmington 4-1 for a doubleheader sweep Saturday at Friedman Diamond.
Alan Pastyrnak and
John Puttress homered for the Huskies, and
Pete Castoldi ripped two doubles. Leenhouts twirled another gem, backing up his CAA pitcher of the Week honors from last week with 10 strikeouts while allowing just six hits.
Puttress earned a triple in addition to his first collegiate home run, and
David Gustafson chipped in a triple of his own.
Logan Gillis and
Tony DiCesare each hit a single to contribute offensively.
Pastyrnak got the game going the right way for NU, legging out an inside-the-park home run for his first homer of the season. He roped a line drive into center field that took a friendly bounce off the turf and over Wilmington's Grayson Evans' head. Pastyrnak, a high school All-State sprinter, wheeled his way around the bases for a clean inside job.
NU tacked on its second, and eventually game winning, run in the next inning. Puttress tripled into the gap in left center, his second three-bagger of the year. Evans, UNCW's center fielder, appeared to have injured his arm on a dive attempt and left the game immediately after. The next batter, Gillis, ripped a single up the gut to put the Huskies up 2-0.
Wilmington, meanwhile, struggled mightily against Leenhouts. A masterful mix of off-speed pitches and deadly accuracy made Leenhouts look like a puppet master, with the Seahawks only there to do his bidding. Robbie Monday was the only player not fooled by Leenhouts' magic, as he whacked a solo home run to tally UNCW's only score and to put himself in a tie for the league lead with 12 dingers (he is currently even with Georgia State's Ryan Fleming).
The Huskies, unfazed by Monday's blast, put up runs in the fifth and the seventh inning. In the fifth, Gustafson drove a two-out triple into the deepest part of center field, and he came home on Castoldi's ensuing ground-rule double. It was Castoldi's second double of the day and his second hit of the season. He came into the game on an 0-for-19 streak before posting the two hits.
The seventh inning was the icing on the cake, as Puttress drove a pitch deep to left field for a lead off home run.
All of NU's offense came off of Seahawk starter Cameron Roth, who entered the game tied for the CAA lead in wins with six.
Neither team scored for the remainder, as Leenhouts polished off the final three batters in the ninth inning in nine pitches, including a three-pitch strikeout. He finished with 123 pitches, 17 short of the 140 he threw last week against George Mason.
The Huskies and Seahawks wrap up their series tomorrow afternoon at Friedman Diamond. First pitch, featuring
Charly Bashara on the mound, will be delivered at 1 p.m.
