Les Williams threw a complete game four-hitter against Old Dominion, leading the Huskies in an 8-2 victory at Friedman Diamond. The offense was spectacular as well, earning 11 hits on the day, including home runs from John Puttess and
Frank Compagnone. Williams cruised the whole game, needing just 98 pitches to navigate his way through an overmatched Monarchs lineup. Of the 98 pitches, Williams threw just 25 balls.
With the win, Williams moves to 3-3 on the year. He now sports an ERA of 3.19. He finished with six strikeouts and did not issue any walks today.
NU looked sharp with the bats, tattooing ODU starter Kyle Hald and reliever Brandon Smith. Hald entered the game leading the CAA in multiple catagories, including wins and strikeouts. Hald allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits, striking out six and walking two.
The Huskies jumped to an early 1-0 lead after two innings, and stretched it to 2-0 in the fourth. Two errors and a single from
Jon Leroux created the run in the second, while Puttress' blast was the run in the fourth. It was his second home run of the year. Puttress also added a single, finishing his day going 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI.
Old Dominion, which was held without a hit until the fourth inning, cut the lead in half in the fifth, scoring once to make it a 2-1 game. But Compagnone's homer in the sixth made it 4-1, sealing what would eventually be a win for NU.
Tony DiCesare led off the sixth with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice from Puttress, and scored when Compagnone planted his first home run of the season into the back of the visitor's bullpen.
A few scoreless frames passed as Williams stormed through hitter after hitter. ODU managed hits in just three innings, garnering just two runners left on base in the entire game.
The Huskies twisted the knife in the eighth, scoring four runs on five hits to put the game out of reach. DiCesare singled to lead off, followed by singles from Puttress and Compagnone. With one out,
Pete Castoldi ripped a two-RBI single to center field, moving Compagnone to third base.
Brendan Stokes added an RBI groundout, and a hard hit ball from
David Gustafson ate up the shortstop, giving Castoldi the chance to score.
Old Dominion added one run in the ninth by virtue of a lead off triple and a sacrifice fly, but the game had already been decided.
Matt Miller added a single for NU in the first inning. The third through sixth spots in the order for NU (DiCesare, Puttress, Compagnone and Leroux) each got two hits, combining for an 8-for-14 day with seven runs scored.
