The Northeastern men's hockey team suffered its third-consecutive road loss in a quirky game at New Hampshire, 5-2, on Saturday night at the Whittemore Center Arena. The game was delayed on several occasions, particularly near the third period, due to power outages on UNH's campus.
Junior
Justin Daniels added his team-leading fourth goal while newcomer
Ludwig Karlsson continues to dominate offensively. The Linkoping, Sweden native has scored a point in all four contests he has skated in, including his second-career goal at UNH. Both J. Daniels and Karlsson are riding four-game point streaks.
Sophomore
Clay Witt earned his fourth-career start, first of the season, and stopped 33-of-38 Wildcats' shots. Matt DiGirolamo turned aside 15-of-17 shots. Northeastern has been outshot in all six games this year.
Juniors
Vinny Saponari and
Steve Quailer joined sophomore
Rob Dongara on the scoring sheet as all three forwards were credited with assists in the setback.
The first half of the initial period did not yield many chances for either team, but New Hampshire's first grade-A opportunity lit up the scoreboard at 8:22 of the first period.
Kevin McCarey accepted a pass from Casey Thrush and wheeled the puck around the left circle for a hard wrist shot on Witt from 15 feet out. Witt made the first stop, but the puck trickled to the ice and Mike Borisenok swooped in on the far post and dunked the loose rebound to give the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage.
The Huskies were given a chance to tie it up after a Damon Kipp hooking call took place at 10:27, but Northeastern could not make much of the opportunity. New Hampshire took a majority of the shots and channeled the momentum into another Borisenok even-strength tally at 13:17.
Junior
Drew Ellement's clearing pass was picked off by Thrust at the red line and UNH capitalized on the turnover. Ellement made the original block on Thrush's wrist shot from the right dot, but the puck fortuitously scooted over to Borisenok's stick in front of Witt. Borisenok shoveled the disc five-hole on Witt to double the lead, 2-0.
Northeastern cut the deficit in half at 5:56 of the second period on a transition goal from the Huskies' first line of Quailer, J. Daniels and Saponari. On a broken play in NU's zone, Quailer carted the puck up the left side of the sheet and passed over to Saponari a top the blue line. Saponari made a deke and deferred to a wide-open J. Daniels on the near post. J. Daniels corralled the puck and chipped it in through DiGirolamo's pads to make it 2-1.
Five minutes later, New Hampshire reclaimed its two-goal buffer from the same forward line that accounted for its first two tallies. Thrush provided the puck over to Borisenok in the near corner of the Huskies' zone. Borisenok ripped the initial shot and as the puck ricocheted up in the air, McCarey pounced on the goalmouth to push the lead to 3-1 at 10:57.
Rookie
Joseph Manno was cited for a hook at 14:04 of the second stanza, but Northeastern's penalty killing unit prevented any lucrative Wildcat chances. At the end of UNH's power play, John Henrion sat for a slash on J. Daniels at 15:59. The Huskies possessed in New Hampshire's end for the majority but could not counter with the extra man.
The Huskies made it a one-goal contest with just 45 seconds to play in the second period in similar fashion as their first tally. Northeastern broke up a UNH play and Dongara flew out of the zone and into Wildcats' territory. Dongara passed up to Karlsson on the left dot and the freshman sniped a wrist shot off the left post to inch back within a goal, 3-2.
Just 1:16 into the third period, the power at the Whittemore Center went out, practically setting up a brand new game.
Unfortunately for the Huskies, the power outage benefited the home team as New Hampshire struck again at 7:21 of the third. Austin Block attacked in the near slot on a pass from Kevin Goumas for another two-goal advantage, 4-2.
Sophomore
Cody Ferriero's hitting from behind penalty at 14:34 proved costly as New Hampshire cashed in on the first power play tally of the evening at 16:21 in the final frame. Dalton Speelman connected with Stevie Moses on a cross-ice pass to the near post and Moses buried the wide-open one-timer to make it a 5-2 final.
Northeastern will make its final trip of the regular season to North Andover on Friday, Nov. 4 to take on Merrimack at 7 p.m. The following night, the Huskies welcome the Warriors to finish off the regular-season set at Matthews Arena on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m.
