Sophomore Eric Jenkins was the first member of the Northeastern cross country program to compete at the NCAA Championship since 1993 (Erik Nedeau) and bettered nearly three quarters of the 252-man field on Monday at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course located at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Ind.

The Portsmouth, N.H. native finished in 67th place with a season-best time of 30:31.5. Jenkins shaved over a minute from his NCAA Regional time last weekend (31:36.9) that helped him qualify for his first NCAA Championship.

“Eric ran as well as anyone could expect someone to run at their first NCAA championship,” distance coach Renny Waldron said. “He's a great competitor and it's going to be exciting to see what he can do as we now turn our attention to the track season.”

Lawi Lalang of the University of Arizona ran away with the individual national title with a clip of 28:44.1, besting the runner-up, Chris Derrick (Stanford) by over 13 seconds (28:57.1). Lalang was an at-large qualifier like Jenkins.

The University of Wisconsin captured the 2011 NCAA cross country team championship with a team total of 2:29.11. Oklahoma State was the runner-up with an aggregate of 2:30.09.

With the cross country season in the books, the Northeastern track & field program switches its focus to the indoor season and will kick of the season with the third annual Jay Carisella Track & Field Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 3 at the Reggie Lewis Track And Athletic Center in Boston.
