The Northeastern University baseball team dropped both games of Sunday's double-header in West Palm Beach, Fla.,dropping a heart-breaking 6-5 decision to St. Bonaventure and losing the late game to Rhode Island 12-4.

Game 1 Recap

The Huskies fell behind the Bonnies early, but were able to produce a five-run fifth inning to take a commanding 5-1 lead. St. Bonaventure chipped away however, plating one in the seventh before scoring three unearned in the ninth off closer Dylan Maki to equalize the game at 5-5.

After a scoreless 10th inning and top of the 11th, the Bonnies went to work in the bottom half of the frame. A Nick Brennan single to center off of losing pitcher Sam Berg started the inning for St. Bonaventure. After a Berg wild pitch put Brennan in scoring position, Jamie Wallshelaeger's sacrifice bunt put Brennan 90 feet away with just one out. The winning run was plated after another Berg wild pitch as Brennan sprinted home for the deciding run.

The loss put the Huskies at 0-2 on the season.

Junior southpaw Andrew Leenhouts started the game for the Huskies, pitching a solid six innings for Coach McPhee. The Franklin, Mass. native allowed one run on nine hits, while whiffing six for the no-decision.

St. Bonaventure took the early lead on the Huskies in the fourth, as Michael Grieco, leading off, took the Leenhouts offering and barely cleared the right-field fence for the HR that gave the Bonnies a 1-0 lead.

The Huskies came roaring back in the fifth however, as Jimmy Filter took the Eddie Gray offering and tripled to deep center to start the inning. After a Pete Castoldi walk, an Oliver Hart's single to short tied the game at 1-1. Aaron Barbosa's sacrifice bunt put both runners in scoring position with just one out, allowing junior co-captain Matt Miller to break the deadlock with his two RBI single to give the Huskies a 3-1 lead. Northeastern was not done however. Following an Alan Pastyrnak pop-out, Jon Leroux continued the Huskies' fifth inning barrage by hitting a single up the middle. Matt Howard immediately capitalized on the chance by singling up the middle to advance the Huskies lead to 4-1. The Huskies were able to make it 5-1 after a successful double-steal of Leroux and Howard, prompting the catcher Grieco to over throw second base on the attempt, and Leroux scampered home for the Huskies' fifth running of the inning.

St. Bonaventure refused to go down without a fight, scoring one off of senior Ryan Maguire in the seventh to cut the deficit to just three at 5-2. Jason Radwan lead off the inning with a walk, and advanced to second on a wild pitch after two quick Bonnie outs. Austin Ingraham took advantage, firing a single up the middle to score Radwan, cutting the Husky lead to 5-2.

A pair of Huskies' miscues in the ninth ultimately doomed Northeastern. Billy Urban started the ninth with a lead-off walk, and advanced the third after Alan Pastyrnak misplayed a Ryan Skellie grounder, putting runners at the corners with none out. Ingraham immediately capitalized, rocketing a single up the middle the cut the Huskies' lead to two at 5-3, putting Skellie at third. Maki was able to get Grieco to strike out for the first out in the ninth. With Brennan batting, Maki's pickoff attempt of Ingraham was thrown over Miller's head, scoring Skellie and putting Ingraham at third representing the tying run. Brennan singled thereafter, and the Bonnie nodded up the score at 5-5. Maki was able to escape without any further damage, striking out the next to batters to end the ninth.

Hart and Barbosa both had solid games for Northeastern by collecting two hits apiece.

Game 2 recap

The Northeastern University baseball fell to the Rhode Island Rams in game two of Sunday's double-header, dropping a 12-4 decision in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Rhode Island was able to score early and often, eventually jumping out to a 9-1 fifth-inning lead.
The Rams were able to jump out to a 2-0 lead in the third, when Jeff Cammans hit a one-out single off the glove of starting pitcher Brandon McNelis. After Kyle Border advanced him to second with his slow roller to Maguire, Tom Coulombe hit a two-out RBI single to score Cammans and put the Rams up 1-0. Greg Ammarummo doubled to center to put the Rams up 2-0 before Ty Muller flied out to Barbosa to end the frame.

The Huskies cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom half of the inning, starting with Maguire's one-out single to get things going for Northeastern. After Sean Lyons sacrificed himself to get Maguire into scoring position, Barbosa singled to second, and Pat Fortunato's overthrow at first allowed Maguire to score and Barbosa to reach second. Northeastern was unable to do any more damage, and entered the fourth down just one run.

Rhode Island put up a crooked number in the fourth, plating six Rams and putting the game out of reach at 8-1. The inning started with a lead-off walk to Milan Adams. A Fortunato sacrifice bunt and passed ball put Adams at third for Jeff Roy, who singled to put the Rams up 3-1. A Jimmy Filter error put runners on the corners, before Mike Lebel stole second to suddenly have two in scoring position with just one out. Cammans (4-5, 3 RBI), hit a two-run single and suddenly Rhode Island was up 5-1. Another Husky error, this time by Miller, put two on. A bold double-steal by Rhode Island once again had two runners in scoring position, before Coulombe hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Cammans. The Rams weren't done yet however, as an Ammarummo RBI single and and subsequent steal gave Muller an RBI chance. Muller singled into center, and Ammarummo sprinted home, concluding the inning with the Rams up 8-1.

The Rams scattered a few more runs throughout the game, receiving a Camman's RBI single in the fifth to put Rhode Island up 9-1.
Northeastern attempted a late-inning rally, cutting the lead to 9-2 with an Hart RBI ground out in the sixth.
In the seventh, Tucker Roeder hit a deep two-out triple to score Jason Roth from third, and subsequently scored on an Anthony Pisani wild pitch to cut the Rams' lead to 9-4.

Rhode Island was able to plate three more runs in the final two inning to put the final score at 12-4.

Tomorrow, the Huskies return to the diamond looking for revenge against St. Bonaventure. Sophomore Chris Carmain is scheduled to throw against the Bonnie at 3 p.m. in West Palm Beach, Fla.
