The Northeastern University baseball team fell in its 2011 home opener on Tuesday, dropping a 6-4 decision at the renovated Friedman Diamond to the Brown Bears in Brookline, Mass.

The Huskies fell behind 1-0 in the first, but scratched together two runs in the home half of the inning to take the 2-1 edge. Alan Pastyrnak and Matt Miller both hit one out singles to start the Huskies' attack, and with two outs, Jimmy Filter tripled to deep left center field to give NU the lead.

Brown tied the game in the next half inning, receiving a two-out home run from Graham Tyler off of Huskies' starter JT Ross to equalize the contest.

NU was unable to answer in the bottom half before Brown scored three runs in the top of the third to take a commanding 5-2 lead. Batting with one out, Wes Van Boom blasted the Ross offering over the left center field fence to give Brown a 3-2 lead. Ross was able to get the second out, before Pete Greskoff drew a two-out walk. Mike DiBiase made the score 5-2 with one swing of the bat, clubbing a home run to left to put the Huskies down three runs.

The Bears extended their advantage to 6-2 in the fourth when John Sheridan hit a two out single to extend the inning. Sheridan quickly stole second, and advanced to third when Van Boom reached on a dropped third strike. Matt Colantonio pounced on the RBI opportunity with a double down the right field line, plating Sheridan for the Bear's final run of the contest. After a walk, Ross was able to get DiBiase to strike out to end the frame.

Ross went 4.0 innings, allowing all six runs (five earned) on eight hits. Ross struck out six batters in the effort.

Matt Cook, Kevin Ferguson, Chris Carmain and Dylan Maki were able to keep the damage at bay with 5.0 shutout innings.

The Huskies attempted to mount a rally in the bottom half of the fourth, but were only able to plate one to cut the deficit to 6-3. Jimmy Filter took a one out offering and doubled to left center, putting himself in scoring position. Oliver Hart grounded out for the second out before Pete Castoldi and John Puttress were both hit by pitches to load the bases. With Matt Howard batting, Bears' starter Connor Burke uncorked a wild pitch, advancing each runner 90 feet and scoring Filter. Howard struck out to end the frame.

Both teams traded zeroes until the seventh, before freshman Aaron Barbosa's perfectly placed two-out bunt allowed him to reach via single. Barbosa quickly swiped second base to advance himself into scoring position for Alan Pastyrnak. Pastyrnak capitalized, singling to the opposite field, scoring Barbosa to put NU within two runs. Northeastern was unable to score after, extending the losing streak to four consecutive games.

The Huskies were able to get the tying run to the plate in the ninth with a lead off single through the left side by Pete Castoldi. Jon Leroux put Castoldi into scoring position on a routine 4-3 groundout for Jason Roth, who rolled one back to the pitcher for the second out of the inning. Castoldi was able to advance to third on the play, before Barbosa was punched out on a bang-bang play at first to end the game.

The loss drops NU's 2011 record to 2-12. The Huskies are back in action starting Friday night with a three-game set at Old Dominion. Les Williams is slated to throw game one, with sophomore Andrew Leenhouts hurling game two. Senior Brandon McNelis is scheduled to throw in the third game on Sunday.
