Jenkins blazes a trail in the 5K, West-coast style

Results

Rookie Eric Jenkins painted the West coast black and red on Friday night in the 5,000-meter at the Stanford Invitational, winning his section with a time of 14:09.67.

Not only is Jenkins' mark the third best in school history, but it is the best 5K time ever recorded by a freshman in Northeastern outdoor track & field during competition. The last time a Husky posted a top-five time in the 5,000-meter run was when Brad Schlapak finished in 14:04.60 in April 15, 1989. John Flora holds the record of 13:56.8, set back on June 5, 1976.

The Portsmouth, N.H. native won Section 3 by almost two seconds, outlasting one of the strongest fields in the country. In all, Jenkins' pace stacked up as the 23rd best in a field of 99 of the NCAA's top talent from coast to coast.

Jenkins was joined by classmate Brian Doyle, who posted a time of 14:53.41 in the same event. The East Greenwich, R.I. native finished 22nd in his section and 87th, overall.

Both newcomers will continue on with their freshmen campaigns next week at the Ramapo Invitational on Saturday, April 2, and hope to qualify for the first round of the NCAA Championship from May 13-15 in Princeton, N.J.
