The Northeastern University baseball team defeated the Boston College Eagles in an extra inning affair Tuesday afternoon, claiming a 2-1 victory at Friedman Diamond in Brookline, Mass.
Freshman outfielder
Aaron Barbosa had his third consecutive multi-hit game in the effort, going 3-5 with a walk and two steals. The steals are his eighth and ninth of 2011. DH
Jon Leroux (2-5) slugged two hits as well.
NU scored the winning run in the 11th without the benefit of a hit. After two quick outs, SS
Oliver Hart walked to represent the winning run. 2B
Alan Pastyrnak drew a quick base-on-balls before Barbosa reached on a dropped third strike to load the bases for junior co-captain
Matt Miller. Miller was unable to capitalize on the situation, but the opportunity never presented itself as Eagles' reliever Eric Stevens uncorked a wild pitch to score Hart for the winning run.
The win advances NU's record to 5-16.
JT Ross kept the NU offense in the game, hurling nine innings of one-run ball. The effort was his longest of the year.
The teams traded zeroes until the fourth when Northeastern plated one for the 1-0 edge. The lead was short lived however, as the Eagles answered in the top of the fifth to equalize the contest.
The Huskies mounted a rally in the fourth, receiving a trio of back-to-back-to-back singles from
Jeff Dunlap, Leroux, and
Jimmy Filter to load the bases for
Pete Castoldi. Castoldi and BC pitcher Geoff Oxley battled, with Castoldi fouling off numerous Oxley pitches before Castoldi lined one to Eagles' right fielder Mike Sudol, allowing Dunlap to score from third for the 1-0 NU lead. A wild pitch advanced both Leroux and Filter to second and third, but
Oliver Hart flew out to center to cap the Northeastern scoring.
Ross dominated the Boston College bats through the first four innings, surrendering just one hit while walking only one. The Eagles pressured Ross in the top of the fifth, putting the first two runners on. Ross drilled Matt McGovern to lead off, then allowed a single to Spencer Payne to put runners on first and second. Jim Laufer flew out to Castoldi in right but Matt Hamlet tied the game with an RBI single to left.
Aaron Barbosa caught Brad Zapenas' fly ball for out number two, but Ross walked Marc Perdios to load the bases. The senior southpaw prohibited any further damage, forcing Anthony Melchionda to foul out to Castoldi for the third out.
NU attempted a one-out scoring threat in the seventh, starting things with a one-out walk by Barbosa. The base-on-balls was the third time Barbosa reached on the afternoon. The freshman quickly swiped second for his second steal of the afternoon, leading to the RBI opportunity for Miller. MIller advanced Barbosa to third with a routine 4-3 ground out, but Puttress' chopper in front of the plate was fielded cleanly by BC pitcher Matt Alvarez to conclude the frame.
Northeastern continued to pound the Eagles with scoring chances throughout. Dunlap led off the eighth with a walk, but Leroux flew out to deep right for the first out. Hunter Gordon was summoned from the Eagles' pen to pitch to Filter, but the junior 3B from La Jolla, Calif. grounded to third for the second out. Dunlap advanced to scoring position on the play, however Castoldi grounded into a routine 5-3 put-out to end the inning.
That inning remained the lone blemish for Ross, as he quickly dispatched the Eagles in both the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth. In total, Ross pitched 9.0 innings while giving up just five hits. Ross also walked three batters, but struck out three in the no-decision. Ross garnered a double play off the bat of Matt Watson to end his day. Watson rocketed a liner to Miller at first, who caught Matt McGovern leaning off first for the unassisted double play.
The Huskies will travel to Maryland this weekend to battle Towson in CAA action. Senior
Les Williams will pitch Friday, while
Andrew Leenhouts toes the rubber in the second game.
Brandon McNelis will finish the series in game three.
