The Northeastern University baseball team fell in the opening round of the Beanpot, dropping a 6-1 contest to the Boston College Eagles at Friedman Diamond in Brookline, Mass.
The game was tied until the bottom of the fifth inning until BC scored five times to put the game out of hand. Boston College was designated as the home team before the start.
Huskies' starter JT Ross allowed back-to-back-to-back singles to Matt McGovern, Garret Smith, and Anthony Melchionda to load the bases for Andrew Lawrence, who broke the 1-1 tie by ripping a two run single into center for the 3-1 Eagles' lead.
Melchionda was Ross' final batter of the afternoon. The senior southpaw allowed five runs, all earned, on nine hits and one walk in five innings for his fourth loss of the year.
Sophomore Chris Carmain was summoned from the BC bullpen, but walked Marc Perdios to reload the bases for Nate LaPointe. LaPointe gave the Eagles' the 5-1 edge by singling into center to score both Lawrence and Melchionda, advancing Perdios to third while LaPointe took second on the throw. After Carmain induced a force play for the first out, Tom Bourdon flew out to left for the RBI sacrifice fly to score Perdios for BC's fifth and final run of the inning.
Northeastern had plenty of opportunities early, having a runner in scoring position in the first three innings and a bases loaded, one-out situation in the sixth, but could not take advantage to lower the team's record to 11-22 (6-9 CAA).
Aaron Barbosa remained a pleasant top of the order surprise for the Huskies, going 4-4 while stealing his 15th base of the season. The effort raised Barbosa's batting average to .336.
Boston College took a 1-0 lead in the second, mounting a one run, two-out rally for the early edge. Ross retired Melchionda and Lawrence, but Perdios and LaPointe each singled to give the Eagles runners at first and second. Matt Hamlet capitalized on the early RBI chance, smoking a base hit into center for the first run of the game.
NU countered in the fourth, scoring once to equalize the contest. Senior Jeff Dunlap drew a leadoff walk to bring Pete Castoldi up to bat. Dunlap took off on the first pitch to Castoldi, who executed his part of the hit-and-run perfectly, driving a liner over the outstretched glove of Hamlet to put runners at the corners with none out. Jon Leroux subsequently grounded into a 6-3 double play, but Dunlap scampered home for the Huskies' only run of the game.
Sam Berg pitched a perfect ninth to lower his ERA to 3.75 in 10 appearances.
Northeastern will battle Massachusetts at 3:30 p.m. at Fenway Park in Boston, Mass.
The Huskies return to action on Friday, facing Georgia State in a three-game home weekend series. Senior Les Williams will pitch Friday with junior Andrew Leenhouts tossing game two on Saturday. Senior Brandon McNelis will toe the rubber on Sunday.
