Northeastern at Harvard
Half of the Beanpot constituency will meet up in Cambridge on Saturday night at the Bright Center, marking Northeastern's first trip to its cross-town rival Harvard since a 6-5 overtime loss on Dec. 19, 1999. Since that meeting in late December of 1999, the Huskies and Crimson have skated against one another just one other time outside the Beanpot. Northeastern shutout Harvard, 3-0, at Matthews Arena on Jan. 19, 2011, in a rare Wednesday night affair. Saturday night will be the 99th meeting between the two Beantown programs with Harvard holding a 65-33 advantage. The two teams have oddly never tied in this storied series. Within the Beanpot, Harvard possesses a 23-18 advantage in 41 contests. In 58 non-Beanpot tilts, HU has a 42-15 edge in the series. The last time Northeastern won a contest at Harvard dates back to Jan. 12, 1978, where the Huskies throttled Harvard, 14-5.
Cracking the Crimson Code
No. 20 Harvard rests at an even 4-4-1 mark with a 3-3 total in ECAC action. The Crimson have hit the skids in their last three outings, losing 5-0 to UMass Lowell on Dec. 10 along with a 2-2 draw at Merrimack and a 1-0 setback at Colgate. Newcomer Jimmy Vesey, currently skating with the U.S. at theIIHF World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia, leads the Crimson attack with eight points and five goals. Vesey's 0.89 points per game is tied for 69th best in the country and tied for eight amongst all first-year skaters. Tommy O'Regan is close behind with seven points, owning a club-best six assists in nine games. Junior Raphael Girard has started all nine games for HU and owns a .928 save percentage (18th in NCAA) and 2.37 goals against average (34th in NCAA). Harvard' special teams are disproportionate. The Crimson rank dead last in the country on the power play with just two goals on 33 chances. The penalty-killing unit is ninth best in the NCAA, stopping 31-of-35 opportunities (88.6 percent).
Finding a rest stop
Northeastern's 1-0 victory at Massachusetts on Dec. 1 snapped a seven-game road-losing streak dating back to the 2011-12 season. The Huskies last victory away from Matthews Arena occurred at Vermont on Jan. 28, 2012, 4-2.
A nice, short easy Reid
Sophomore
Adam Reid scored his first goal for NU this season since netting the game winner against Maine on Feb. 24, 2012. Reid also put away his first-career short-handed goal, counting as the Huskies second short-handed goal of the season. The last time Northeastern scored short-handed was when
Robbie Vrolyk turned the trick in the season opener against Merrimack, Oct. 10. Reid's goal also stands as his third-career game-winning tally. The Chino Hills, Calif., native has scored seven goals in his tenure at Northeastern.
Short-handed winners
It's not often a short-handed goal stands as the game-winner, but
Adam Reid's short-handed winner at UMass on Dec. 1 marks the second-straight season Northeastern has scored a goal of that variety. The last time Northeastern scored a game-winning goal short handed was when
Steve Quailer tallied an unassisted, empty-net goal against UMass Lowell on Dec. 10, 2011.
Freaky Friday
Northeastern's win at the Mullins Center on Dec. 1 marked the Huskies' first victory on a Friday night of the 2012-13 season. Previously, NU was 0-4-0.
P-Adding to his legacy
Senior backstopper
Chris Rawlings already Northeastern's career leader in shutouts, added another to his resume with a 1-0 victory at Massachusetts on Dec 1. Rawlings is now two clear of the former Huskies' leader, Brad Thiessen, with 11 total shutouts in 108 career games. Thiessen totaled nine shutouts in his tenure and originally set the record on Feb. 27, 2009 in his 103rd-career start. Rawlings' notched his 10th-career shutout in his 102nd-career start as a Husky with a 3-0 victory over Alabama-Huntsville on Nov. 10. As a sophomore, Rawlings tied Keni Gibson's (2003-04) single-season shutouts record in 2010-11 with a total of five. Rawlings' 1-0 blanking at UMass marks just the second time he has gotten one goal of support when pitching a shutout (Boston University, Nov. 6, 2009).
Roy-t a start
Rookie sensation
Kevin Roy posted his second two-goal outing of the season with a pair against Massachusetts on Dec. 1. The Lac-Beauport, Quebec, native leads Northeastern in points (13) and goals (7) and his multi-goal performance against UMass marked his fifth multi-point game of the season. Nationally speaking, Roy leads all freshmen in Hockey East scoring with 0.87 points per game. That figure ranks 10th across the entire country amongst first-year skaters. Roy's points per game average is tied for 82ND in all of college hockey. His 0.47 goals per game is tied for 54TH in the NCAA.
Shutting down the competition
Starting with the 0-0 scoreless draw with New Hampshire on Oct. 27, the Huskies have posted a shutout in three of their nine outings leading up the 1-0 blanking at UMass on Nov. 30. Northeastern also shutout Alabama-Huntsville on Nov. 10, 3-0. The last time NU amassed this many shutouts in such a short span was when
Chris Rawlings blanked three opponents in four matchups from Jan. 15 to Jan. 28, 2011.
Stringy Sap
Senior captain
Vinny Saponari recently pieced together a career-high (at NU) seven-game point streak that spanned from Nov. 2 to Nov. 23. The Powder Springs, Ga., native produced eight points (3-5-8) within that stretch. The longest streak by a Husky since Saponari's tear was
Steve Quailer's 10-game point streak last season that spanned from Nov. 18, 2011 to Jan. 13, 2012.
Remember us?
Sophomore
Dan Cornell and
Zak Stone each tallied their first points of the season against St. Lawrence on Nov. 23. Cornell assisted on
Ludwig Karlsson's fifth tally of the season while Stone's helper came on
Dax Lauwers' first goal as a Husky.
Dax attacks
Sophomore transfer
Dax Lauwers netted his first goal as a Husky in his 12th game of the year. The Anchorage, Alaska, native scored his first collegiate goal while a member of Army (2010-11) at Mercyhurst on Nov. 13, 2010. Lauwers also assisted in his first game at Northeastern.
Extra, extra read all about it
In
Kevin Roy's two-goal performance at UVM on Nov. 18, one of his tallies was with the extra attacker. The Huskies had not scored with an extra attacker since
Mike McLaughlin turned the trick at New Hampshire on Feb. 10, 2012.
Witt-y
Junior goaltender
Clay Witt saw his first action in net for Northeastern on Nov. 16 at Providence since starting against Boston University on March 3, 2012. In 37:02 minutes of work, Witt turned away 17-of-20 shots. The Brandon, Fla., native has appeared in 16 games for NU with six starts. Witt possesses an overall record of 3-5-0 with a 2.97 GAA and a .914 save percentage.
Pair of PPGs
Despite a lopsided score at Providence on Nov. 16, Northeastern scored a pair of power play goals for the first time this season. The last time NU put away a pair on the power play was on Jan. 27, 2012, at Vermont. Last season, Northeastern scored two or more power play goals four times.
Shooting for the record books
In the 3-0 win against Alabama-Huntsville, Northeastern totaled 54 shots to the Chargers' 19. That number marks the most total shots for a Northeastern team since Feb. 13, 1993, when Northeastern registered 54 shots against Maine. It has been almost six and a half years since Northeastern has reached the 50-shot plateau. The last time NU totaled 50 shots was at Providence on Jan. 17, 2004 (50). The only other time Northeastern hit the 50-shot mark since the 54-shot performance on 2/13/93 was against Holy Cross on Nov. 30, 2001 (51). Northeastern outshot UAH both games on Nov. 10-11, marking the first two times of the season.
Kalling all Karlssons
Ludwig Karlsson scored three goals in two games against Alabama-Huntsville on Nov. 10-11, including a pair of power play goals. The last time the Stockholm, Sweden, native strung together goals in consecutive outings was a three-goal scoring stretch from Nov. 12 to Nov. 19, 2011. Three of Karlsson's five tallies on the year have come on the power play. With that figure, Karlsson is tied for 24th in the country in power play goals (0.20 pppg). Karlsson also scored two goals against Alabama-Huntsville on Nov. 10, marking the first time a Husky accounted for a pair of goals since Feb. 3, 2012 against UMass.
