Game 1 Recap
After a three-run first inning, the Jacksonville Dolphins took the first game Saturday's doubleheader by a score of 4-1.
Huskies starter junior
Dylan Maki took the loss after going six innings and allowing four runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Northeastern got two hits from
Aaron Barbosa,
Rob Fonseca,
John Puttress, and
Oliver Hart.
Connor Lyons batted in the lone Northeastern run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning and
Sean Lyons pitched two innings of scoreless relief in his first appearance of the season.
Taylor Ratliff started the game with a walk and then stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on an RBI single by Chris Anderson. Later in the inning, a one-out double by Jonathan Murphy plated two more runs, giving the Dolphins a 3-0 lead.
Both starters settled into a rhythm and the game stayed 3-0 until the bottom of the fifth. The Dolphins loaded the bases with no outs. Maki then surrendered a sacrifice fly to Adam Brett Walker, which put the Dolphins up 4-0, but Puttress caught Dan Gulbranson trying to steal second and Chris Anderson flied out to deep center field to end the inning without any further damage.
Lyons made it 4-1 with a sacrifice fly that scored
Jason Vosler, but that was the only offense the Huskies could muster against Jacksonville's Alex McRae, who got the win after going eight innings. Drew Woods closed the game out in the ninth for the Dolphins to pick up his first save of the season.
Sophomore
Sean Lyons made his first appearance of the season out of the bullpen, coming on to pitch two perfect scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth.
Game 2 Recap
In game two, the Huskies got three runs of their own in the first inning and never looked back, winning their first game of the early season 8-1.
Junior
Kevin Ferguson went eight innings, surrendering just a single run on four hits to get his second career win. Puttress had three hits to lead the team and senior
Tucker Roeder went 2-5 with three RBI in his season debut.
Barbosa led off the game with his first triple of the season and
Michael Foster got him home with a sacrifice fly for his first career RBI. Walks to
Matt Miller and
Rob Fonseca and a single by
John Puttress loaded the bases for Roeder, who got his first start of the year as the designated hitter. The Red Hook native grounded out, but got home Miller to make it 2-0. The Huskies made it 3-0 after
Oliver Hart reached on an error, scoring Fonseca.
Jacksonville got a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout by Adam Brett Walker to get on the board and make it 3-1.
In the fourth the Huskies extended their lead when
Connor Lyons was hit by a pitch, went to second on a Barbosa groundout, and was doubled home by Fonseca. The freshman first baseman came home a few pitches later after Dolphin pitcher Sean Green threw two consecutive wild pitches, pushing the lead to 5-1.
The Huskies tacked on two more runs in the seventh on an RBI double by Roeder to make it 7-1 after loading the bases with no one out.
In the ninth, the Huskies got their final run when Puttress led off with a double and came around to score on a wild pitch thrown by Adam Maxon. Foster got his first action of his career on the mound in the bottom half of the ninth, and completed the inning after allowing just one walk.
The team has a full week off before returning to Florida to face the Boston Red Sox in their annual exhibition game on March 3 in Fort Meyers. First pitch from JetBlue Park is scheduled for 2:35 p.m.
