The Georgia State Panthers (9-11, 2-0) scored two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to come from behind and defeat Northeastern (8-6, 2-3) 9-8.
Freshmen
Rob Fonseca and
Alex McKeon hit home runs in the loss, while sophomore
Aaron Barbosa had three hits for the Huskies.
Dylan Maki went seven innings for Northeastern in the loss, allowing seven runs on 16 hits.
Jake Dyer lasted 5.2 innings for the Panthers, also allowing seven runs on 12 hits.
The Panthers took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Brandon Williams hit a two-run homer to left field.
The Huskies got on the board in the third when
Matt Miller hit an RBI single up the middle to score Barbosa from third, making it 2-1.
In the bottom of the third the Panthers extended the lead to 3-1 when Joel Van Asch grounded out, scoring Jonathan Kolowich.
Northeastern took its first lead of the game in the fourth, scoring four runs to make it 5-3. The inning started when Fonseca hit a solo home run to left center for his third long ball on the season.
Jason Vosler kept the inning going with a single through the left side and McKeon brought him around to score with a two-run home run of his own. The final Husky run of the inning was scored when catcher
John Puttress hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score
Michael Foster.
The Huskies tacked on two more runs in the sixth to make it 7-3 when
Jon Leroux hit a two-run single through the left side of the infield, scoring both Puttress and Foster.
But the Panthers responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs. Kody Adams hit an RBI single and Caden Bailey hit a triple, scoring Adams to make it 7-5.
Northeastern extended its lead to 8-5 in the top of the seventh with an insurance run when Foster laid down a bunt single and McKeon came around to score on a an error by Van Asch.
Georgia State scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to 8-7 and two more in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead. Joey Wood hit an RBI single which tied the game and the Panthers took the lead when Van Asch hit a single to center field, scoring Wood and making it 9-8.
Needing one run to tie it in the top of the ninth, Fonseca reached on an error to lead off the inning but Vosler flied out to right and McKeon struck out. Fonseca was then thrown out attempting to steal second, ending the game.
Sam Berg suffered the loss, allowing two runs in the eighth, while Tyler Claburn came on in the sixth to get his first win of the season.
The teams will play the third and final game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
