Game 1 Recap

Northeastern scored two runs in the fifth inning and held on, defeating Bowling Green 4-3 in the first game of a Sunday afternoon doubleheader.

Andrew Leenhouts went the distance in the seven-inning affair, allowing three runs on eight hits and picking up his first win of the season. For Bowling Green, Ethan McKenny also went all seven innings, allowing four runs on seven hits.

With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Northeastern scored two runs behind triples from Oliver Hart and Michael Foster and didn't look back from there.

The Falcons took the lead in the top of the second when they got back-to-back doubles, but the Huskies responded in the bottom of the inning and took their first lead of the game. Northeastern started the inning with three straight singles from Rob Fonseca, Ricky Salvucci and John Puttress to load the bases with no outs. Connor Lyons then grounded into a double play, but was able to get Fonseca home to tie the game. Oliver Hart then beat out an infield single that scored Salvucci to make it 2-1 before Jason Vosler grounded out to first, ending the inning.

Leenhouts cruised through the third and fourth innings before giving up a solo home run to T.J. Losby in the top of the fifth, which tied the game at 2-2.

Once again, Northeastern responded by scoring two runs of its own to re-take the lead, 4-2. Hart put the Huskies in business in the bottom half of the fifth with a one-out triple to deep center field. Vosler sent him home with a double to right field and after an Aaron Barbosa sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third, freshman Michael Foster tripled to deep right center field. Matt Miller kept the inning alive with a walk, but Fonseca struck out looking to end the inning.

Leenhouts allowed back-to-back singles to start the top of the seventh to Brandon Howard and Jesse Rait, but then struck out Alex Davison and got Losby to pop out to second base. Logan Walker singled to right field, scoring a run to cut the Husky lead to just one, but Jeremy Shay flew out to center field to end the game.

Game 2 Recap

In game two, the Huskies went up 3-0 in the third inning on freshman Michael Foster's first career home run and never looked back, winning by a score of 5-2 to sweep the doubleheader.

Dylan Maki made his second start of the season, also going the distance and surrendering 2 runs on 5 hits with six strikeouts.

Barbosa led off the game with a single up the middle and stole second to put himself in scoring position, but the Huskies made three straight outs and failed to score in the top of the first.

Maki also surrendered a single to start the game, but got three straight outs to get out of the first without any damage.

Junior Pete Castoldi led off the third inning by reaching on an error by shortstop Brandon Howard. He then advanced to second on a passed ball and moved to third on a wild pitch as Connor Lyons walked. After Barbosa popped up for the first out of the inning, Foster belted one over the left field wall for a three-run homer. It was the second baseman's first long ball of his Husky career. Miller kept the inning going by walking and then stealing second and third base, but Fonseca struck out and Puttress lined out to short.

Northeastern kept things going in the fourth, with a leadoff single by Hart. Then Tucker Roeder walked, Castoldi moved both runners up a base, Connor Lyons got hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Barbosa batted in Hart with an RBI groundout to second to make it 4-0. Foster then grounded out to short to end the inning.

The Falcons scored their first run off Maki in the bottom of the fifth on a single by Brandon Howard, but couldn't do any more damage and the inning ended when Jake Thomas flew out to Lyons in center field.

In the sixth, Hart again led off with a hit, this time it was a double down the left field line. Roeder moved him to third on a sacrifice fly to right and Castoldi popped out to second for the second out of the inning, but Connor Lyons hit a line drive single up the middle to score Hart and make it 5-1. Lyons then stole second and Barbosa worked a four-pitch walk, but Foster grounded out to first to end the inning.

After Matt Pitzulo cut the Husky lead to 5-2 with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth, the Falcons had two men on base and brought the tying run at the plate, but Maki got Logan Walker to ground out to second base to end the inning.

In the ninth, Maki struck out the side, finishing off his first win of the season.

The Huskies improve to 3-2 overall on the season and will have a short turnaround before they take the field on Monday morning against St. Bonaventure at 11 a.m. in Winter Haven, Fla.
