Northeastern blanks W&M 8-0

Senior Andrew Leehouts pitched a complete-game, four-hit shutout and the Huskies (6-3, 1-0) scored two runs in the second, third, fourth and seventh to defeat William and Mary (9-6, 0-1) 8-0 in the first game of the first CAA series of the season.

Sophomore Aaron Barbosa went 4-4 with two RBI and two runs scored and freshman Jason Vosler hit his first career home run in the victory.

In his third start of the season, Leenhouts struck out 10 batters and walked just one through nine innings, improving his record to 2-0.

Tribe starter Cole Shain lasted just four innings, allowing nine hits and five earned runs and took his second loss of the season.

Northeastern opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the second inning. Freshman Alex McKeon singled up the middle to start off the inning and Vosler followed him with a single to right field. Connor Lyons then hit an RBI single to left center, making it 1-0. Later in the inning, Barbosa singled through the right side, scoring Vosler and making it 2-0.

The Huskies were back at it in the third when freshman Rob Fonseca hit a one-out triple to right center field. He came around to score on a sacrifice fly by McKeon. Then Vosler hit a solo home run to make it 4-0.

Northeastern scored two runs for the third consecutive inning in the fourth when freshman Michael Foster and Barbosa hit back-to-back triples before junior catcher John Puttress drove Barbosa in with a sacrifice fly.

The score stayed 6-0 until the seventh when Matt Miller hit Northeastern's fourth triple of the game, scoring Barbosa and making it 7-0. The final run of the game was scored when McKeon reached on an error, bringing Miller home from third base.

Game two of the series is Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. when the Huskies will go for the series win. Dylan Maki (1-1, 3.46 ERA) will make his third start of the season against Matt Davenport (2-0, 1.05 ERA).
