The Rhode Island Rams got ahead early with five runs in the second inning and held on to defeat Northeastern 7-1 in a nonconference battle in Kingston, R.I., Tuesday afternoon.
Matt Miller went 3-4 with a double for Northeastern, while
John Puttress added two more hits, giving him 35 on the season.
Matt Cook made the start for Northeastern, but didn't last long, pitching two innings and allowing six runs on six hits to take his second loss of the season.
Liam O'Sullivan picked up his second win of the seasonfor the Rams, lasting six and two-thirds and allowing one run on eight hits.
O'Sullivan was a bit wild in the top of the first, allowing a run after walking two and hitting a batter.
John Puttress got the Huskies' first hit of the game with one out with a single up the middle.
Matt Miller grounded out to second, moving Puttress up a base and
Jon Leroux got hit by a pitch. A wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third and
Jason Vosler worked a walk, loading the bases.
Rob Fonseca worked a second consecutive walk, forcing home Puttress.

The Rams tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a run of their own. Cook walked Jeff Roy and allowed a double to Chris Famiglietti before getting Jeff Cammans to ground back to the mound for the first out. Pat Quinn grounded out to first, scoring Roy to tie the game 1-1. Fortunato got hit with a pitch to extend the inning, but Cook got Kevin Stenhouse to fly out to right field to end the inning.
URI took the lead in the second, scoring five runs on five htis. Cook hit Greg Annarummo in the second and Joe Landi moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt. Annarummo stole third and Cook got Caputo to strike out swinging for the second out of the inning. Roy hit a double to deep left field to bring around Annarummo and give URI a 2-1 lead. Jeff Cammans doubled in two more runs to make it 4-1. Quinn brought Cammans home with a single that hit off the first base bag and went into the outfield and Fortunato hit a single to left center, making it 6-1.
Greg Ferguson came on to relieve Cook in the third, making his first appearance of the season on the mound. After allowing two men on, the senior struck out Caputo and Roy and then got Famiglietti to ground out to first base to get out of the jam without any damage.
In the fourth, senior
Sam Berg came on and retired the Rams in order. Berg stayed on for the fifth and retired the first two batters he faced, but then got into trouble, walking three straight batters. The last walk forced in a run, putting the Rams up 7-1. Freshman
Nick Berger came on in relief and got Cammans to ground out to short, ending the inning.
Berger stayed on and pitched a perfect sixth, striking out Quinn and Fortunato and getting Stenhouse to ground out to second. He finished after two and a third innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two.
In the seventh, Barbosa and Puttress got on with back-to-back singles and Miller kept things going with another single to right field, loading the bases. But Leroux struck out and Vosler grounded out to second, ending the chance.
Sean Lyons pitched a scoreless inning in the eighth for Northeastern, recording two strikeouts.
The Huskies head to Virginia this weekend to face James Madison in a CAA series. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
