The James Madison Dukes were too much for Northeastern to handle Friday night, scoring seven runs in the sixth to win 14-6.
Jon Leroux and
Jason Vosler each had two hits in the loss for the Huskies, while
Jason Roth hit a pinch hit home run in his first at bat of the season.
Andrew Leenhouts got the start for the Huskies but lasted just four innings and took his second loss of the season, allowing seven runs on 10 hits to the Dukes.
JMU's Patrick Toohers picked up the win after pitching six innings and allowing four runs on seven hits.
Northeastern took the early lead in the top of the first inning when junior
Jon Leroux hit a two-run homer with two outs.
But the Dukes answered right back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first when Bradley Shaban hit a two-run single to right field, tying the game.
The Huskies took the lead back in the top of the third, scoring two more runs on a double to left field by
Rob Fonseca. The double was the third consecutive hit for Northeastern in the inning after Leroux got on with a one-out single and
Jason Vosler doubled to left, moving Leroux to third.
Once again James Madison responded in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs on six hits to take a 7-4 lead and end Leenhouts' day.
The score stayed the same until the Dukes opened up the game two innings later in the sixth, scoring seven runs on three hits to extend the lead to 14-4.
Down 10 runs, junior relief pitcher Michael Murphy came in and pitched two and two-thirds innings of one-hit ball, his most effective appearance of the season.
The Huskies were able to score two additional runs in the ninth, making it 14-6.
Jason Roth hit a pinch-hit solo home run in his first appearance at the plate this season to lead off the inning. Then
Ricky Salvucci and
Justin Kessler each reached on errors before
Tucker Roeder doubled to left, scoring Salvucci.
Matt Miller worked a two-out walk to extend the inning, but Leroux struck out, ending the game.
Northeastern will look to even the series tomorrow night when the teams square off in game two of the series. Game time is at 6:30 p.m.
