Barbosa new NU hit king as Huskies hammer Hens

Box Score Box Score

Aaron Barbosa went 3-for-4 to break Northeastern's single-season hits record, and Nick Berger battled to within one out of a complete game as the Huskies (23-28, 13-17 CAA) downed Delaware (27-25, 17-13 CAA), 12-9, in their season finale.

Barbosa singled to left in the first and tapped an infield single in the fifth to tie and then break Mike Tamsin's previous record of 74 hits, set in 2009. The Dracut, Mass., sophomore added another infield single amidst Northeastern's seven-run seventh inning, establishing the new record of 76.

Berger persevered through 8.2 innings, allowing ten hits with two walks and six earned runs. He struck out three Blue Hens and picked up the fifth win of his freshman campaign.

The two sides traded early runs before both starters settled into their grooves. After his record-tying single leading off the first, Barbosa advanced to third after Gatto threw away a pickoff attempt. Senior tri-captain Matt Miller then singled Barbosa home to get the Huskies out to a 1-0 lead. Delaware would then tie the game its half of the second on an RBI groundout from EJ Stoltzfus.

Berger was going strong for Northeastern until a defensive mishap resulted in a pair of unearned runs. With two on and two out, EJ Stoltzfus lifted a single into center that sophomore Connor Lyons misplayed, allowing both runners to score as Stoltfus went all the way around to third. Brock Niggebrugge's single then scored Stoltzfus to cap a three-run inning that made it 4-1.

The Huskies would then take advantage of a Delaware defensive lapse in the sixth, as an error and a balk brought Miller to third after he had singled leading off the inning. Junior Jon Leroux's RBI groundout scored Miller; Leroux finished the season with 49 RBI's, sixth most in Northeastern history for a single season. Miller finishes his outstanding career with 199 games played, the most of all time.

Delaware pulled back ahead by three on an RBI single from Stoltzfus, but a seven-run rally on just four hits put the Huskies ahead for good in the seventh. The first seven Huskies reached base in the inning, including three walks and a hit batsman. Miller and Leroux swatted consecutive RBI singles, with sophomore shortstop Oliver Hart contributing one of his own as Northeastern took advantage of an error, a wild pitch and a passed ball in the frame.

Junior John Puttress' double play ball brought home a tenth run, and freshman Rob Fonseca and senior tri-captain Tucker Roeder each picked up RBI hits in the ninth to add extra insurance. Coach Neil McPhee then stuck with Berger for the ninth, but was forced to call on Hart to nail down the game's final out after Delaware loaded the bases. Hart allowed an RBI single to Mottle and uncorked a wild pitch before striking out Tyler Powell to end the game.

Northeastern finishes the CAA schedule with a 13-17 record, good for eighth place. The Huskies had entered the weekend in contention for the sixth and final CAA Tournament spot, which was claimed by Towson.
