SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Stephen Sollowin and
Wesley Gallagher earned top-ten finishes overall to lead the Northeastern men's cross country team to a second place team finish at the Nassaney Invitational in the Huskies' season opening race. The NU women placed 14th overall, lead by
Danielle Klein's 54th place finish.
In a dual scored meet against Bryant and Boston University, which is ranked eighth in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Northeast Regional Poll, the NU men defeated the Bulldogs by nearly 30 points before the Terriers escaped with a nine point victory. The women's team was edged by Bryant (45-16) and BU (43-16).
“I am extremely pleased at how I saw our groups compete today,” said
Cathrine Erickson, director of track and field and cross country. “The conditions were warm and the competition was just right for the first meet.”
Sollowin took third place in the men's 8k race with a time of 25:45.00 in a back-and-forth battle with Boston University's Robert Gibson, who edged Sollowin by 0.80 seconds. Gallagher trailed closely behind with a time of 25:46.20, good for a fourth place finish.
Zachary Fraeilli clocked in next for Northeastern at 26:36.00, finishing 16th overall while
John Jantz (22nd; 26:50.10),
Sebastian Putzeys (23rd; 26:52.90) and
Allen Meringolo (27:34.70) also earned points towards the team score.
“The men gave Boston University a run for its money and beat #9 men from Harvard, which on the first race of the year is a good place to start,” said Erickson. “Of our top-three finishers, two are sophomores and one is a freshman, which is very exciting for the future of Northeastern cross country.”
On the women's side, Klein's time of 19:51.20 set the pace for the Huskies in the 5k race.
Noelene Power (80th),
Jocelyn Hubbard (83rd) and
Caitlin Cloonan (85th) all race within 15 seconds of each other, finish with times of 20:48.90, 20:55.60 and 21:03.20, respectively.
Also competing for the Huskies was
Eryn Wheeler, who placed 88th with a time of 21:12.20,
Lindsay Fisher (99th; 21:48.30) and
Samantha Harbison (105th; 22:15.20).
“There is a lot of spirit and heart on both squads,” said Erickson. “I am looking forward to seeing how the men and women continue to improve over the course of the season.
Northeastern will be back in action next weekend as the Huskies travel to the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational on Sep. 15.
