Northeastern vs. Boston University
Boston rivals Northeastern and Boston University collide for the first time this season on Friday night at Agganis Arena in what always proves to be a spirited affair. NESN will air the first meeting between NU and BU since last year's overtime thriller when one-time Terrier
Vinny Saponari knocked off his old club by scoring the overtime winner at 2:35 in the extra frame. The Terriers got the best of Northeastern last season, winning the season series, 2-1-0, and have dominated the all-time mark, 152-55-8. Even though NU has only won five of the last 15 encounters with its crosstown foe, 12 of those contests have been decided by a goal or less with BU leading that stretch, 8-5-2. Friday is a preview for the first round of the Beanpot where NU and BU will square off at the TD Garden on Feb. 4. NU's last win against BU in the Beanpot occurred on Feb. 8, 1988; the Huskies' last Beanpot trophy.
Rhett-oric
The Terriers weigh in as the No. 9 team in the country with an overall mark of 12-7-0. In its last outing, BU knocked off Merrimack on the road, 4-1, to help heal the wounds from a 6-5 overtime loss to Harvard on Jan. 9. Cason Hohmann and Wade Megan have spearheaded BU's offense thus far. The combo is 30th (1.05 ppg) and tied for 34th (1.00 ppg), respectively, in NCAA scoring. Megan is eighth in the country with 0.61 goals per game while Hohmann's 0.74 assists per game are 19th best in the nation. With the departure of Kieran Millan, the Terriers have turned to a pair of rookie goaltenders in Sean Maguire and Matt O'Connor. Nationally speaking, Maguire is seventh in save percentage (.938) and eighth in goals against average (1.83) but O'Connor's earned more starts with a 7-5-0 mark. The Terriers' offense is 20th in the NCAA, averaging 3.00 goals per game while the defense is slotted in 27th (2.63 gpg).
Roy-rking his rookie magic
Kevin Roy has scored 20 points (9-11-20) in 18 games as a rookie. The Lac-Beauport, Quebec native's 20-point benchmark stands as the seventh-consecutive season an incoming Husky has scored 20 points in a season, starting in 2006-07 with Chad Costello (11-11-22). Roy is the fastest to 20 points as a rookie since Jason Guerriero hit that same mark in his 18th-career game during the 2001-02 season.
Rawlings rising in the record books
After his season-high 42-save performance against Maine on Jan. 11, senior goaltender
Chris Rawlings surpassed Brad Thiessen's (2006-09) mark of 3,166 stops for the second most saves all-time at Northeastern and has amassed 3,203 career saves heading into Friday's game against BU. Rawlings also tied Thiessen for third-most games played in net with 111 career appearances and trails Keni Gibson's (2001-05) mark of 115 games played by just four showings. The North Delta, British Columbia native needs 355 more saves to break Bruce Racine's (1984-88) school record of 3,557. Rawlings needs to average just over 22 saves per game, not counting the postseason.
Four for Ferriero
Cody Ferriero turned in a historic night for Northeastern in a 5-1 win at Harvard on Dec. 29. The Essex, Mass., native scored four goals in all, including three power play tallies in the second period. Ferriero's four-goal outburst is the first in NU history since Ken Manchurek turned the trick on March 6, 1982 (vs. Boston Univesity), a gap of 11,256 days or almost 31 years. Ferriero's incredible benchmark stands as just the third four-goal game in the NCAA this season.
Hats off on the power play
Cody Ferriero's four-goal performance on Dec. 29 was highlighted by three consecutive power play tallies, all in the second period, in a span of 8:59. He is the first player in modern Northeastern history to score three-straight power play goals in a single period. The last time a Husky scored consecutive power play goals was when Wade MacLeod turned the trick in a 7-7 tie at Boston College on Feb. 18, 2011. Only one other skater in college hockey has scored three power play goals in a game (Minnesota State's Chase Grant vs. Alabama-Huntsville on Oct. 12, 2012).
Three the hard way
Cody Ferriero's three power play goal outburst was the first for Northeastern in almost 26 years. Dan McGillis scored three power play goals in a game on Jan. 27, 1996 against Brown. Ferriero's trifecta also came all in one period. The last time a Husky scored three goals in a period was Ryan Ginand on Nov. 4, 2005 against UNH.
Six pack of history
Cody Ferriero backed up his four-goal performance (Dec. 29, 2012) with two more tallies in his following outing against Bentley on Jan. 5, 2013. Ferriero is the first player in modern history to record six goals over the span of two games. Rod Isbister (1982-86) scored six goals over the course of three games from Jan. 30 to Feb. 6, 1986, but no Husky in the modern era has netted an average of three goals in two games.
Trick-eration
Cody Ferriero has now accounted for two hat tricks in his career, with his first taking place at Vermont on Jan. 27, 2012. Ryan Ginand is the last Husky to collect two hat tricks in a career. Ginand scored three goals in a game against UNH on Nov. 4, 2005 and against Providence on Jan. 24, 2009.
Take five
Kevin Roy tallied five points (1-4-5) in the Huskies' 5-1 win at Harvard on Dec. 29, marking the first time a Northeastern player has scored five points in a game since both Mike Morris (2-4-6) and Jason Guerriero (2-3-5) turned the trick against UMass on March 5, 2005. Roy's five-point performance stands as the NCAA's third occurrence thus far in the NCAA.
Help me help you
Kevin Roy became the first player to record four assists in a game since
Ludwig Karlsson in a 9-2 win at Notre Dame on Dec. 2, 2011. Roy assisted on all four of Ferriero's goals at Harvard on Dec. 29.
It's been an honor
Following their offensive explosion at Harvard on Dec. 29,
Cody Ferriero and
Kevin Roy were honored as the Hockey East Athletic Republic Co-Player of the Week and Pro Ambitions Co-Rookie of the Week, respectively, on Jan. 2. On Jan. 3, Roy was named Pro Ambitions Hockey East Rookie of the Month in December after averaging 2.33 points per game (3-4-7).
Roy becomes Northeastern's first Rookie of the Month since Brad Thiessen took the honor in January 2007. Northeastern has gathered six Hockey East weekly awards this season, including Roy's Rookie of the Week and NU's Team of the Week awards on Oct. 15 and
Bryan Mountain's Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 29.
Seeing red
Northeastern's 5-1 win over the Crimson on Dec. 29 marked the Huskies' first win in six trips to Harvard and its first since Jan. 12, 1978, when the Huskies won, 14-5. The game also marked NU's first journey to the Bright Hockey Center since Dec. 19, 1999.
y SUCCESS AFTER TWO
This season, NU is 6-0-0 when possessing the lead after two periods of play.
Playing catch up
Northeastern surrendered the first goal in a 5-1 triumph at Harvard on Dec. 29, marking just the second time the Huskies recovered after giving up the first tally of the game. The first game in which NU gave up the first goal and won came against Alabama-Huntsville on Nov. 11 (3-1).
Power play resurrection
Northeastern went 3-for-4 on the power play in a 5-1 win at Harvard on Dec. 29, with all three goals coming from the stick of
Cody Ferriero. Before that game, the Huskies' power play was ranked eighth in Hockey East, but has since risen to fifth in the conference. Northeastern is now 11-for-72 (.153) with the extra man.
Roy-t more can you ask for?
Through 18 games,
Kevin Roy is tied for the Hockey East lead in power play points. Roy has tallied nine points (2-7-9) on the power play, averaging 0.50 power play points per game.
Machine Gunn
Freshman defenseman
Mike Gunn made his debut as a Husky on Dec. 29 at Harvard and assisted on
Cody Ferriero's fourth goal in his first-career game.
Finding a rest stop
Northeastern's 1-0 victory at Massachusetts on Dec. 1 snapped a seven-game road-losing streak dating back to the 2011-12 season.
A nice, short easy Reid
Adam Reid scored his first goal this season since netting the game winner against Maine on Feb. 24, 2012. Reid also put away his first-career short-handed goal, counting as NU's second short-handed goal of the season. The last time Northeastern scored short-handed was when
Robbie Vrolyk did it in the season opener against Merrimack, Oct. 10. Reid's goal also stands as his third-career game-winning tally. The Chino Hills, Calif., native has scored seven goals in his tenure at Northeastern.
Short-handed winners
It's not often a short-handed goal stands as the game-winner, but
Adam Reid's short-handed winner at UMass on Dec. 1 marks the second-straight season Northeastern has scored a goal of that variety. The last time Northeastern scored a game-winning goal short handed was when
Steve Quailer tallied an unassisted, empty-net goal against UMass Lowell on Dec. 10, 2011.
P-adding to his legacy
Senior backstopper
Chris Rawlings already Northeastern's career leader in shutouts, added another to his resume with a 1-0 victory at Massachusetts on Dec 1. Rawlings is now two clear of the former Huskies' leader, Brad Thiessen, with 11 total shutouts in 111 career games. Thiessen totaled nine shutouts in his tenure and originally set the record on Feb. 27, 2009 in his 103rd-career start. Rawlings' notched his 10th-career shutout in his 102nd-career start as a Husky with a 3-0 victory over Alabama-Huntsville on Nov. 10. As a sophomore, Rawlings tied Keni Gibson's (2003-04) single-season shutouts record in 2010-11 with a total of five. Rawlings' 1-0 blanking at UMass marks just the second time he has gotten one goal of support when pitching a shutout (Boston University, Nov. 6, 2009).
Roy-t a start
Rookie sensation
Kevin Roy posted his second two-goal outing of the season with a pair against Massachusetts on Dec. 1. The Lac-Beauport, Quebec, native leads Northeastern in points (20) and goals (9) and his multi-goal performance against UMass marked his fifth multi-point game of the season. Nationally speaking, Roy leads all freshmen in Hockey East scoring with 1.11 points per game. That figure ranks second across the entire country amongst first-year skaters. Roy's points per game average is tied for 25th-best in all of college hockey. His 0.50 goals and 0.61 assists per game are tied for 26th and 48th in the NCAA, respectively.
Shutting down the competition
Starting with the 0-0 scoreless draw with UNH on Oct. 27, the Huskies posted a shutout in three of their nine outings leading to the 1-0 blanking at UMass on Nov. 30. Northeastern also shutout Alabama-Huntsville on Nov. 10, 3-0. The last time NU amassed this many shutouts in such a short span was when
Chris Rawlings blanked three opponents in four matchups from Jan. 15 to Jan. 28, 2011.
Stringy Sap
Vinny Saponari recently pieced together a career-high (at NU) seven-game point streak that spanned from Nov. 2 to Nov. 23. The Powder Springs, Ga., native produced eight points (3-5-8) within that stretch. The longest streak by a Husky since Saponari's tear was
Steve Quailer's 10-game point streak last season that spanned from Nov. 18, 2011 to Jan. 13, 2012.
Remember us?
Sophomore
Dan Cornell and
Zak Stone each tallied their first points of the season against St. Lawrence on Nov. 23. Cornell assisted on
Ludwig Karlsson's fifth tally of the season while Stone's helper came on
Dax Lauwers' first goal as a Husky.
Josh Manson notched his first point of 2012-13 with an assist at Harvard on Dec. 29.
Dax attacks
Dax Lauwers netted his first goal as a Husky in his 12th game of the year. The Anchorage, Alaska, native scored his first collegiate goal while a member of Army at Mercyhurst on Nov. 13, 2010. Lauwers also assisted in his first game at NU.
Extra, extra read all about it
In
Kevin Roy's two-goal performance at UVM on Nov. 18, one of his tallies was with the extra attacker. The Huskies had not scored with an extra attacker since
Mike McLaughlin turned the trick at New Hampshire on Feb. 10, 2012.
