Bredahl lights up offense, Huskies top CAA rival Towson, 3-0

Box Score

BOSTON – The Northeastern women's volleyball team (13-7, 5-1 CAA) won its sixth-consecutive game and improved to 5-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association when it topped Towson (6-18, 0-6 CAA) for the second time this season, 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 29-27) at Cabot Center on Friday night.

Jamie Bredahl was outstanding for the Huskies as she recorded a triple-double with 13 kills, 11 digs and 24 assists. The rookie led the team in kills for the first time since NU took on San Francisco at the Aztec Invite earlier this season. Kelly Bacon continued her excellent play by notching her 12th double-double of the season with 10 kills and 12 digs.

Fourth-year setter Ina Kamenova matched Bredahl's 24 assists and Natalia Skiba anchored the defense with a match-high 17 digs in the winning effort for Northeastern.

Towson's Paige Sekerak recorded a team-high 13 digs while Lindsay Flaherty and Victoria Williams tied for the team lead with nine kills apiece.

Northeastern finished the evening with a .206 attack percentage and held the Tigers to just .175 on the attack. Since the start of conference play, NU has held its CAA opponents to a .153 hitting percentage, ranking the Huskies first in the conference for the category.

The first set provided a lot of back-and-forth action as neither side held a lead greater than three. The Tigers claimed an 8-5 advantage in the early goings of the set, but a pair of kills by Nichole Kurz and a couple of Towson errors allowed the Huskies to move ahead, 9-8.

A Bredahl kill increased the NU lead to 15-12, but the Tigers stormed back with four consecutive points capped off by an ace from Aimee Schubert to push Towson ahead by one, 16-15. In an attempt to slow the Tigers' momentum, Huskies' head coach Ken Nichols burned the first timeout of the set.

Immediately following the huddle, Bacon knotted the game at the 16 mark with a cross-court swing. NU's attack placed pressure on the Tigers, forcing consecutive errors and giving Huskies an 18-16 cushion.

Towson evened the stanza at 23, but Bredahl and Bacon teamed up for a couple of kills to seal the deal, 25-23.

The Tigers landed on the board first to kick off the second frame, but Kurz and Bredahl recorded consecutive kills to give NU a 4-1 advantage. Errors plagued Towson's side, giving the Huskies a three-point lead, but a duo of blocks and and a swat by Flaherty allowed the Tigers to go ahead, 12-11.

The Tigers knotted the score two more times during the set at the 15 and 16 marks, but Northeastern never allowed Towson reclaim the lead. A kill from Ava Cramp capped off a 5-1 run that gave the Huskies a 21-17 go ahead before a dump from Kamenova closed out the second set, 25-20.

Northeastern appeared to have control in the third set when it took a six-point lead, 13-7. The Huskies built a seven-point cushion after a kill from Janelle Tucker punctuated a 6-2 run to put Northeastern ahead, 20-13.

The Tigers would not go down without a fight and used an 8-1 run to tie the set, 21-21. A pair of Northeastern errors gave the Tigers a two-point lead, but three-straight points put the Huskies back on top, 25-24.

The teams exchanged points in tense, back-and-forth action, but Bacon closed the third set, 29-27, with a kill down the left side.

The Huskies return to action at 1 p.m., on Sunday, Oct. 20, when they host Delaware at Cabot Center. Northeastern will then hit the road for a five-game swing.
