BOSTON—Backed by double-doubles from
Kelly Bacon and
Jamie Bredahl, the Northeastern women's volleyball (14-7, 6-1 CAA) team improved to 6-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association when it defeated Delaware (11-10, 3-4 CAA), 3-1 (25-10, 25-16, 21-25, 25-18) at Cabot Center on Sunday afternoon.
Bacon registered her 13th double-double of the season with 15 digs and 23 kills, just one swing short of tying a career-high. Bredahl showcased another outstanding performance with 13 kills (.591) and 22 assists on the night.
Senior
Janelle Tucker was just one kill shy of posting a double-double, recording 9 kills on 23 swings, 17 digs and a service ace. Her .391 attack percentage marks a season-high for the outside hitter.
Libero
Natalia Skiba manned the back court with a match-best 29 digs, the most since Northeastern kicked off conference play. Fourth-year setter
Ina Kamenova threw up a match-high 32 assists and tied a career-best with four aces.
As a team, Northeastern held Delaware to a .133 hitting percentage. Since the start of conference play, the Huskies have held their CAA opponents to an average .153 attack percentage, ranking Northeastern first in the conference for the category.
The Huskies got off to a strong start with four straight kills to open the match and registered seven swings in the first 10 exchanges to put NU ahead, 6-2.
Facing a 9-3 deficit, Delaware strung together three straight points to close the set to within three, but it was all Black and Red after that. Northeastern posted an 8-2 run, forcing the Blue Hens to burn their second timeout of the set, trailing 17-8.
Delaware tallied a single kill following the huddle, but Northeastern held the Blue Hens to just two points for the remainder of the set. Bacon's seventh kill of the night put the Huskies on top, 1-0, with a 25-10 first-set victory.
Northeastern carried its momentum into the start of the second stanza, taking the first three points. Delaware made for a close set, closing the gap to within a single point multiple times, but a trio of swats from Bacon prompted the UD to utilize a timeout, behind 15-11. The Huskies maintained the lead down the stretch, allowing just five points for the rest of the set. A kill from Tucker and a Kamenova ace capped off the second set, 25-16, for the Huskies.
Delaware earned its first lead of the match in the beginning of the third set after forcing several Northeastern errors. Trailing 5-2, the Huskies used a 4-1 run to even the score, 6-6, but the Blue Hens would not let up.
The teams exchanged points in the core of the set, knotting up the score seven different times throughout. Tied 18-18, Delaware forced an NU error and threw down a kill from the middle to pressure Northeastern head coach
Ken Nichols to call for a breather. Following the huddle, Bredahl tossed down a right-side swing to bring the score to within one, 20-19, but it was not enough to stop UD from avoiding the sweep and taking the third set, 25-21.
A strong 5-0 start for Northeastern prompted the Blue Hens to call for an early timeout. Delaware's Chandler Bryant tallied a kill to post the first point for UD, but it did not slow down Northeastern as Bacon and Bredahl teamed up for six total kills to extend the lead, 12-4.
Trailing by five, UD landed back-to-back kills and an ace to invade Northeastern's cushion, 17-14, but NU's attack posted six kills down the stretch to take the final set, 25-18.
The Huskies kick off a five-game road swing in Hempstead, N.Y., against reigning CAA tournament champion Hofstra on Friday, Oct. 25. Northeastern will then travel to Williamsburg, Va., to take on William & Mary for the first time this season.
