Box Score
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.—The Northeastern women's volleyball team (14-8, 6-2 CAA) went the distance with reigning CAA tournament champion Hofstra on Friday Night in Hempstead, N.Y., but another outstanding performance from rookie
Jamie Bredahl was not enough as the Pride held on for a 3-2 victory (21-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-19, 13-15). With the loss, the Huskies move to 6-2 in conference play, but maintain a second place standing in the CAA.
Bredahl notched her third triple-double of the season with 20 assists, 11 digs and a career-high 17 kills on 31 swings, recording a match-high .561 attack percentage.
Janelle Tucker and classmate
Nichole Kurz also contributed to the Huskies attack with 8 kills apiece. Both seniors played a big role in NU's defense as Kurz added a match-high eight blocks, while Tucker posted 10 digs on the night.
Natalia Skiba anchored the team's back court with a match-high 19 digs.
Kelsie Willis led the offense for the pride after recording a match-best 21 kills paired with eight digs. Nuria Lopes de Silva and Emily Burke also contributed to Hofstra's attack with 12 kills each.
Northeastern got a quick jump on the board after a Bacon kill and a Pride error gave the Huskies a 2-0 start. Bacon, Tucker and rookie
Caterina Rosander teamed up for a trio of kills to maintain a 6-4 lead. The two teams exchanged points but a Bacon error and three consecutive swings from the Pride's offense put Hofstra on top, 13-10.
In an attempt to slow down the Pride's momentum, NU head coach
Ken Nichols called for the first timeout of the set. Hofstra responded immediately with a cross-court swat from the outside, but back-to-back attacks from Bredahl brought the Huskies to within one.
Offensive errors plagued NU's column, extending Hofstra's lead by five and forcing another huddle for the Huskies. Unfortunately for Northeastern, it was not enough to stop the Pride from taking the first set, 25-21.
Hofstra's momentum carried over into the second frame as the Pride landed three attacks and forced four NU errors for a quick 8-2 advantage. Thanks to Bacon's strong performance at the service line, the Huskies invaded Hofstra's lead to within one, 9-8, after the senior landed three consecutive aces.
Despite tying the score at the 13 mark, Hofstra pulled ahead after throwing down three kills and posting a double-block off
Hanna Gibeau. Northeastern called for its final timeout of the set, but the Pride held NU to just three points for the remainder of the stanza. Hofstra topped off the set with three kills to seal the deal, 25-21.
In an attempt to avoid the sweep, the Huskies entered the third frame fighting as Kurz landed the first kill of the set. Neither team budged in the early goings, until two Hofstra errors broke the final tie and gave NU a 12-11 advantage.
Northeastern and Hofstra entered an offensive duel, exchanging points, but the Huskies pulled out ahead after a Tucker kill prompted the Pride to burn a timeout. Despite landing a kill following the breather, the Pride could not stop Northeastern from staying alive with a 25-18 third-set victory.
NU took another strong start in the fourth set, recording a quick 3-0 lead. Wills slammed down a couple of kills to threaten the Huskies' lead, 10-8, but Northeastern maintained control through the set.
The Huskies used a 3-1 run to extend the gap, 13-9, but the Pride evened out the play, 17-17, after landing two kills.
A Tucker attack pushed the Huskies ahead, 18-17, before holding Hofstra to just two points the rest of the way. Northeastern evened the match, 2-2, with a 25-19 victory.
Entering the deciding set, both teams started strong out of the chute. Knotted up at 5-5, the Pride recorded a 3-0 run to go ahead, 8-5. The Huskies responded with three points of their own to even the score once again, 8-8. Although Northeastern tied the score three more times throughout the frame, Hofstra held on to claim a 15-13 win in the final set.
Northeastern continues its road-swing when they head to Williamsburg, Va., on Nov. 1 to take on William & Mary for the first time this season. The Huskies will travel to Harrisonburg, Va., two days later to face James Madison.
