BOSTON—Northeastern volleyball posted 43 kills on 101 swings for a season-best .297 hitting percentage to sweep CAA rival Towson, 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-14), in Towson, Md., on Saturday night. The Huskies are now 10-7 on the season and 3-1 in conference play.
Senior
Hanna Gibeau led NU's attack for the second consecutive night with nine kills on 20 swings (.350). Middle blockers
Nichole Kurz and
Caterina Rosander manned the net with huge performances, tallying eight kills each and 10 blocks, collectively.
Kelly Bacon contributed 14 digs, eight kills and three aces, while
Ava Cramp chipped in five kills and four block assists.
Libero
Natalia Skiba anchored the defense with a match-high 18 digs. Fourth-year setter
Ina Kamenova recorded a team-best 19 assists along with three digs, while reigning CAA Rookie of the Week
Jamie Bredahl accumulated 17 assists, six digs, three aces and just as many kills.
Towson and Northeastern immediately entered an offensive duel to kick off the match, posting five total kills in just as many exchanges. A Bredahl ace briefly broke it up, but Northeastern followed up with three consecutive kills to post a 7-3 lead.
The Huskies maintained the lead, but a Towson ace and kill brought the Tigers to within one point, 13-12. NU utilized a 7-2 run to pressure Towson in to a huddle, trailing 20-14. Northeastern held the Tigers to just one point in the remainder of the set, capping off the first frame with a 25-15 triumph.
NU jumped on the board with a quick 2-0 lead thanks to back-to-back kills from Kurz and built a six-point insurance spread with three double-blocks. Towson called a timeout, trailing 9-3, but that did not stop the Huskies from putting up two more points to extend their lead.
Trailing by nine at the 22-13 mark, the Tigers used a 4-0 run down the stretch, but Northeastern topped the set with a Bredahl kill and an ace from
Megan Kehoe, 25-17.
The elimination set broke out with an even 3-3 mark, but Northeastern quickly took advantage of the Tigers with a burst of offensive momentum posting four consecutive kills capped with a Bredahl ace. NU recorded an 8-3 run to draw the Tigers into a timeout. Towson showed signs of life with swats from the outside to shorten its deficit to eight points.
Northeastern maintained a minimum eight-point lead for the rest of the match, eventually extending its lead by 10. A big block from
Alexa Armstrong sealed the deal for the Huskies with a, 25-14, match-winning set.
The Huskies will take a break from conference play when they head to Kingston, R.I., to take on Rhode Island on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m.
