James Madison outlasts Huskies in five-set marathon match

Box Score

BOSTON—Despite a 14 kill and 14 dig double-double from senior outside hitter Kelly Bacon, the Northeastern women's volleyball team dropped a 3-2 (25-19, 15-25, 20-25, 25-23, 3-15) decision to James Madison on Friday afternoon at Cabot Center. With the loss, the Huskies move to 17-10 on the season and hold a 9-4 CAA record.

Janelle Tucker also posted a well-rounded performance for Northeastern, adding 10 kills and eight digs. Rookie Jamie Bredahl contributed seven kills and threw up 21 assists, while fourth-year setter Ina Kamenova tossed up 28 assists of her own along with three service aces. Freshman middle Caterina Rosander notched seven kills on the night and Hannah Gibeau, Nichole Kurz and Kat Gueth tallied five kills apiece. Libero Natalia Skiba anchored NU's defense with a match-high 31 digs.

Two Dukes posted double-digit kills, led by Janey Goodman's 19 swings. Lizzy Briones landed 11 and added to James Madison's defensive efforts with 11 total blocks.

After James Madison took the opening point, the Huskies took the next three, capped by kills from Bacon and Kurz. JMU took the next two to even the score, but neither team budged in the early goings. The set would be tied seven times before a four-point run gave NU a 19-15 lead, forcing the Dukes into back-to-back timeouts.

JMU responded with consecutive kills out of the second breather to cut the lead in half, but the Huskies would rattle off another three straight points to go on top 22-17, ending the run with Gibeau's second kill of the afternoon. The senior knocked down another kill to spark a set-closing three point NU slide and end the frame, 25-19.

Bacon opened the second stanza with a kill, but the two squads would trade points through the first five exchanges. JMU rattled off four straight to take its first lead of the match and spark a 6-1 spread.

The Huskies brought the score back to within one with a three-point string, 8-7. The Dukes quickly silenced the Huskies, however, going on a run of 10-4 and grabbing seven insurance points. The Huskies slowed the Dukes momentum with two double blocks to pressure James Madison into a huddle.

NU head coach Ken Nichols called a timeout of his own after the Dukes grabbed five of the next seven to push the contest to 23-15. JMU held the Huskies scoreless for the remainder of the set to even the match with a 25-15 second-set victory.

Like the previous sets, the third frame saw back-and-forth action and even play out the chute. JMU pulled ahead 11-7 with a small break, but NU answered with a trio of kills to even invade the Dukes cushion.

The set opened up after the Dukes claimed a six-point advantage to post a 17-11 gain.

The Huskies would steadily chip away at the deficit, getting back to within three at 19-16 topped with Tucker's fifth kill of the set.

The Dukes answered with a 4-1 rally, but another Tucker kill and a shared block from Tucker and Kurz cut the lead, 23-19, once again. JMU closed out the stanza, 25-20, thanks to sequential kills from Goodman,

Northeastern took a quick 5-1 lead to kick off the fourth set and force JMU into an early timeout. The Dukes took five points in seven exchanges coming out of the huddle to get within one, but errors plagued James Madison's board to give the Huskies a 10-6 advantage. JMU would tie the set at 10 with a four-point streak, before a 5-1 Huskies run led to another JMU timeout, trailing 15-11.

The Huskies added to their lead with Bacon's sixth swat of the set. In an attempt to slow down NU's attack, The Dukes showcased a strong offensive performance before Kat Gueth's third kill of the set and Tucker's tenth of the match brought the Huskies to set point.

The frame was far from over though. Pushed to the brink, the Dukes knocked down six consecutive tallies at set point to get back within one. Bacon silenced the Dukes with her seventh kill of the set to close out the fourth frame, 25-23.

James Madison dominated the opening of the final set with a pair of three-point runs. Trailing 6-1, NU regrouped with a timeout. Bacon responded with two kills, but JMU held the Huskies to just two points for the remainder of the set to runaway, 15-5.

The Huskies close out their regular season slate when they take on William & Mary on Sunday, Nov. 17, at Cabot Center. Northeastern will then head to Charleston, S.C., as the No. 2 seed in the 2013 CAA Volleyball Championships.
