BOSTON—The Northeastern women's volleyball team celebrated Senior Day by sweeping William & Mary, 3-0 (25-12, 25-21, 25-22), to mark its sixth sweep of the season on Sunday afternoon at Cabot Center. With the win, the Huskies close out their regular season slate 18-10 and hold a 10-4 conference mark.
Northeastern's seven seniors were honored in a pregame ceremony and all turned in solid performances.
Kelly Bacon notched her 19th double-double of the season, leading the Huskies with 11 kills and 10 digs. Classmate
Nichole Kurz tallied nine attacks on 14 swings, good for a .400 attack percentage, and contributed three blocks.
Hanna Gibeau and
Janelle Tucker added to Northeastern's offense with eight kills apiece, while
Kat Gueth tallied two. Defensive specialist
Brianna Hollis recorded two digs and a service ace and setter
Ina Kamenova tossed up 18 assists to round out the efforts of the senior class.
"These seniors are enormous contributors to this program," said head coach
Ken Nichols. "They believe in our system and the success level. Their legacy is in tact and it is something that we will strive for in years to come."
Libero
Natalia Skiba manned the backcourt, matching a team-best 10 digs to lead the Huskies defensively. Rookie
Jamie Bredahl had four kills, nine digs and a match-best 21 assists and
Caterina Rosander posted four kills and three blocks.
William & Mary was paced by Dessi Koleva's 12 kill and 12 dig double-double.
Bacon opened Senior Day with a kill on the first point of the match, and notched three kills in Northeastern's first five points. Trailing 5-1, the Tribe used a small 3-1 run to come within two, but another NU surge pushed W&M into the first timeout of the match, down 10-5.
The Tribe could not recover as Northeastern landed six kills in the next 10 exchanges to prompt another Tribe huddle, 18-10. The Huskies held William & Mary to just two points for the remainder of the set as Northeastern closed out the frame, 25-12.
Neither team budged in the early goings of the second set, exchanging points until the Huskies drew a three-point lead capped with back-to-back Tucker kills, 8-5. Two outside swings and an ace from the Tribe tied the frame, 9-9, but NU managed to pull away, thanks to Bacon's seventh kill of the night.
Trailing 15-12, William & Mary hailed a timeout and responded with a cross-court attack from Koleva, but Northeastern posted a 6-2 run to go ahead 21-15. The Tribe would not back down as they held the Huskies at set point for three exchanges in an attempt to regain control. It was not enough to stop NU from taking a 25-21 third-set victory.
Looking for the sweep, a Kurz kill and a couple of W&M errors put Northeastern on the board, 3-1. The Tribe inched their way back drawing a tie at the five mark before pushing with a 7-3 surge to pressure NU head coach
Ken Nichols into a timeout. Errors plagued the Huskies column to prompt another timeout shortly after, trailing 17-9. The resiliant squad came out of the huddle, landing five points in eight rallies to come within four, 19-15. Gibeau strung together a trio of kills to knot up the contest at the 21 mark. A kill from Bacon and Kurz topped the third set, 25-22, in a come-from-behind triumph.
Up next, NU will head to Charleston, S.C., for the 2013 Colonial Athletic Association Volleyball Tournament, where it has earned the No. 2 seed. The Huskies will face third-seeded UNCW or the No. 6 seed William & Mary on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 4 p.m.
