Rise Up with Northeastern hockey (GoNUxstream)
Recapping Friday night with Vermont
The Northeastern men's hockey team ran into a red-hot goalie in Brody Hoffman and lost in a physical 2-1 final on Friday night at Matthews Arena. The Catamounts dominated the Huskies on the faceoff dot, winning 55-of-86 draws to dictate the tempo. Vermont outshot the Huskies, 34-27, as senior goaltender
Chris Rawlings made 32 stops in the setback. Hoffman stopped 26 shots for his ninth win of the season. Sophomore
Adam Reid scored his fourth goal of the season, first power play strike of the season, while rookie
Kevin Roy extended his point streak to a career-best six games.
Jake Hoefler skated in his fifth-career game and first contest for Northeastern since playing at Boston University on March 5, 2011. It was his first game played at Matthews Arena since the New Hampshire outing on Feb. 26, 2011.
Calling all Catamounts
Vermont skates into Saturday's contest with nearly an identical overall mark as Northeastern (9-14-4) but has just won three of 12 games away from Gutterson Fieldhouse. After winning the Sheraton / TD Bank Catamount Cup on Dec. 29-30, topping Union (2-1) and Princeton (6-3), UVM went on a five-game tailspin and has gone 3-5-0 since the holiday tournament. Senior Chris McCarthy leads UVM's scoring efforts with 21 points (7-14-21) and is tied for 17th in Hockey East scoring. Jacob Fallon and Kyle Reynolds lead the Catamounts in goals scored with eight, which is tied for 21st in the conference. First-year netminder Brody Hoffman has started all 26 games and amassed a 2.81 goals against average and .907 save percentage, ranking ninth and eighth in Hockey East, respectively. UVM's defense is surrendering 2.96 gpg (7th) while the offense is scoring at a clip of 2.22 gpg (9th).
MVP effort
After scoring five of Northeastern's six goals in the 2013 Beanpot Tournament,
Kevin Roy added to his sterling freshman season by earning Beanpot MVP honors on Feb. 11. Roy became the first Beanpot MVP of a second-place team since Boston University's Sean Field in 2004. Roy is the Huskies' fifth-ever MVP and Northeastern's first since Bruce Racine took home the award in 1988.
Honorable Huskies
Northeastern picked up three Hockey East awards on Feb. 11 after knocking off Boston University in the Beanpot semifinal on Feb. 4.
Kevin Roy was named Athletic Republic Player of the Week while
Chris Rawlings earned Hockey East Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors. The Huskies were also named Hockey East Team of the Week. In all, Northeastern has won nine league awards this season. Roy won HEA Rookie of the Month (Dec.), marking NU's first honor of that kind since Brad Thiessen in January 2007. Roy has won four awards this season whereas Rawlings wins his first as a senior and 12th of his career.
Top 100 countdown
Vinny Saponari is just seven points away from reaching the 100-point mark for his collegiate career. Granted, NU's captain scored 47 of his 93 points as a member of Boston University, but Saponari is just one point shy of matching his total at BU. The last time a Husky scored 100 total career points was when both Wade MacLeod (61-76-137 – 20th all-time) and Tyler McNeely (44-61-105 – tied for 43rd all-time) met the benchmark in 2010-11.
Captain playmaker
Vinny Saponari recorded a playmaker (three assists) in the Beanpot final, marking his 10th multi-point game at NU but his first three-point outing as a Husky.
Beanpot hangover
In Northeastern's next game immediately following the Beanpot, the Huskies are 22-37-3 and since joining Hockey East, NU has posted a mark of 9-17-3. Northeastern's record in its following game after finishing in second place is 4-6-1 with a 3-4-1 mark after joining the league.
Short changed
Northeastern is one of nine teams in Division I to not surrender a short-handed goal this season. Conversely, Vermont is one of three teams this year that has not scored a short-handed goal.
Quick note
BC's goaltender Parker Milner assisted on Pat Mullane's empty net goal in the Beanpot championship, marking the first time the Huskies had a goaltender score a point on them since defending Stanley Cup champion Jonathan Quick turned the trick on Nov. 10, 2006, at UMass.
#MondayNightRoy
Thanks to
Kevin Roy's first career hat trick in his first-ever Beanpot Tournament appearance, the Huskies played in their 15th Beanpot title game. Roy became the first rookie skater to net a hat trick in his first Beanpot appearance since Boston College's Krys Kolanos on Feb. 7, 2000, in a 6-1 win over NU. The Lac-Beauport, Quebec, native became the first Husky to score a hat trick in the Beanpot since Mike Ryan netted three against Harvard on Feb. 8, 2002. Roy is also the first freshman to score the opening goal of the Beanpot since Boston College's Brock Bradford on Feb. 6, 2006. Roy followed that up with another Monday night performance of two goals in the championship game vs. Boston College.
Rookie ruler
Heading into Friday's game against Vermont,
Kevin Roy is college hockey's top scorer amongst all first-year skaters. Roy's 33 points and 1.27 ppg is tops amongst all freshmen, as are his 0.65 goals per game. Nationally speaking, Roy is third in the country in goals per game and 10th in points per game. Roy is third overall in Hockey East scoring.
Roy-rking his rookie magic
Kevin Roy has scored 33 points (17-16-33) in 25 games as a rookie. The Lac-Beauport, Quebec native's 30-point benchmark stands as the seventh-consecutive season an incoming Husky has scored 20 or more points in a season, starting in 2006-07 with Chad Costello (11-11-22). Roy is the fastest to 20 points as a rookie since Jason Guerriero hit that same mark in his 18th-career game during the 2001-02 season. Roy is now tied for 10th-best rookie season in Northeastern history (Jordon Shields - 14-19-33 - 1992-93).
