TOWSON, Md. – Junior
Eric Jenkins took first place in the 800-meter run and 1500-meter run to spark the Northeastern men's track & field team to a third place finish overall at the 2013 CAA Championships on Saturday.
Jenkins, who broke the facility record in the 1500-meter, led four Huskies in the race with a time of 3:47.33.
Brian Doyle (3:56.21) and
Wesley Gallagher in fifth (3:56.48) also logged points for NU. Jenkins would later pick up his second win of the championship in the 800 at 1:52.06, a new personal best.
Northeastern finished the meet with 158 points overall, trailing champion William & Mary at 185 points.
"First, I am very proud of my staff," said
Cathrine Erickson, director of track & field and cross country. "Each of our coaches has led their athletes in a way that is consistent with the mission of the athletic department. They have educated and led each student-athlete toward 52 personal bests and some very outstanding performances this season and especially at this meet."
Also collecting a gold on the second day of competition was
Jackson MacDonald in the high jump at 1.99-meters to become the third Husky in the last four seasons to take gold in the event. NU closed out the day with a victory in the 4x400-meter relay with an IC4A qualifying time of 3:15.64.
In the decathlon,
Dylan Lucas and
Nicholas Tyler finished off two grueling days of competition with second and fourth place finishes, respectively. Both competitors took first in an event, with Lucas winning the javelin with a PB of 46.78-meters and Tyler in the pole vault at 4.45-meters, a new personal best.
Jared Lane, who ran in five events on Saturday, took third in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 14.39 seconds, trailed closely by MacDonald with a PB of 14.94 seconds. Lane also finished third in the 400-meter hurdles at 55.44 seconds.
In the field, the Huskies collected 11 team points in the shot put, led by a third place finish from
Kevin Rosenberg at 15.67-meters, a new personal best, while
Mark Mastone (14.66-meters) and
Conor Ebbs (13.46-meters) took fourth and sixth, respectively. Ebbs also placed second in the discus on the day at 44.80-meters with
Max Milder coming in sixth (41.16-meters).
Tejorn Davis came away with eight points thanks to his second place finish in the triple jump (14.50-meters), while
Kaylin Miranda set a new PB in the triple jump (12.91-meters) as well as the high jump (1.79-meters).
"I am extremely proud of each student-athlete who put up their best effort with either a personal best or who stepped up to contribute to the overall team score," said Erickson. "We asked people to do things that they haven't done them all season and I am extremely pleased with how they have responded. Every group, sprints, jumps, hurdles, throws, multis, distance and mid-distance made an impact. It is extremely important that our program is a balanced and impactful program, and we are looking forward to adding the incoming freshman to the returners. I anticipate great things next year."
