2013-14 Northeastern men's hockey schedule
BOSTON - The Northeastern men's hockey team announced its 34-game slate for the upcoming 2013-14 season today (June 11). Head coach
Jim Madigan and the Huskies will play in 14 non-conference match-ups with 20 league games, in the first season of the new Hockey East schedule format. Also included in the schedule is three in-season tournaments, including the 62nd annual Beanpot Tournament. NU will also make its second all-time appearance in an outdoor contest as it participates in the 2014 Frozen Fenway festivities.
"This year's schedule presents a strong challenge," Madigan said. "We're very excited to for all components of this upcoming year and look to reposition ourselves in the Hockey East standings."
Northeastern's schedule features 14 home contests at Matthews Arena, including ten home conference games. The Huskies will make three trips outside of New England, including two to Indiana (Notre Dame) and one to New York (Canton).
NON-CONFERENCE
For the first time since opening at Colorado College in 2009-10, the Huskies will begin their season with a non-conference game. With six non-league games to open the season, NU will see its most action without a Hockey East opponent since opening with seven in a row out of league back in 2004-05. Prior to that, Dalhousie visits Boston on Saturday, Oct. 5 for a preseason contest. The contest marks the fifth straight year NU will host a school from Canada in an exhibition game. Last year, St. Francis Xavier skated to a 4-3 victory in the preseason skirmish at Matthews Arena.
After its initial six game non-conference stretch to open the year, the Huskies will also play non-HEA games with regular league foes Massachusetts and Vermont in January. UMass and Vermont were the last two teams to join Hockey East before Notre Dame joined this season, with the Catamounts joining in 2005 and the Minutemen in 1994. NU played non-league games most recently with UMass in 1977 and Vermont in 2004.
TOURNAMENTS
Northeastern will play in three regular season tournaments in 2013-14, including the 62nd rendition of the annual Beanpot Tournament. The first two Monday's in February fall on Feb. 3 and Feb. 10, with Northeastern taking on Harvard in semifinal action before they square off with Boston College or Boston University on Feb. 10 at the TD Garden. The Huskies will also travel to Notre Dame, Ind., to participate in Notre Dame's Shillelagh Tournament on Nov. 29-30, taking on Western Michigan in the first matchup followed by a tilt against either ND or Alabama-Huntsville.
A month later the Huskies will look to bring home the Ledyard National Bank Tournament title again, winning the Dartmouth-hosted tournament the last time they participated back in 2009. NU joins a field in Hanover, N.H., that includes Air Force, Providence and Dartmouth on Dec. 29-30. Northeastern combats Air Force in the opening game and play either Dartmouth or PC the following day. Overall, NU has won its last two non-Beanpot in-season tournaments, winning the Mariucci Classic in Minneapolis in 2011 and the Ledyard in 2009.
HOCKEY EAST
The Huskies will face a 20-game league schedule this season, as the league schedule shifts with Notre Dame's arrival this year (Connecticut will join HEA in 2014-15). The Red and Black take on every league foe twice, playing ten home games and ten away games. The Hockey East schedule is bookended with cross-town rivals, opening with a trip to Boston College on Nov. 1 and closing with a visit from Boston University on March 1. NU will have home-and-home series with all but two HEA schools, hosting Maine twice and making a two-game trip to Notre Dame. The Huskies' home game with UMass-Lowell will be played at Fenway Park on Jan. 14, 2014.
The Hockey East Tournament first round takes place on campus sites from March 7-9. The quarterfinals, also on campus sites, take place from March 14-16 before the Hockey East Championship round at the TD Garden on March 21 and 22. Unlike in the past, all 11 Hockey East constituents will qualify for the 2013-14 postseason.
