DAYTON, Ohio – The Northeastern volleyball team sent an early message to the 22nd-ranked Dayton squad with a first-set victory on Saturday afternoon, but the Flyers stormed back and won three-consecutive frames to claim a 3-1 (25-20, 18-25, 19-25, 20-25) win at the Frericks Center.
For the second-straight day, senior outside hitter
Kelly Bacon logged her second-consecutive double-double with a team-best 12 kills and 11 digs. Junior middle hitter
Alexa Armstrong continued her strong showing on Saturday with another eight-kill performance alongside a dig and a block.
Senior
Janelle Tucker and junior
Ava Cramp both notched seven kills while Tucker chimed in with eight digs. Fourth-year blocker
Nichole Kurz had six kills along with a team-best three blocks. Newcomer
Hannah Fry tossed down four kills and a pair of blocks while junior libero
Natalia Skiba's 27 digs was a match high.
Alaina Turner and Megan Campbell led Dayton's offense with 14 and 12 kills, in that order.
Neither team budged in the early goings of the opening set as the Huskies grabbed their lead of the match following a Fry kill, 5-4.
With the first frame knotted up at 8-8, the Huskies used a quick 4-1 run to take control the rest of the way.
Kurz set the tempo with a big spike up front followed by Cramp's second kill of the day. Bacon and Cramp teamed up for a couple of points, forcing the Flyers to call for a timeout trailing, 13-9.
The Huskies never looked back in that opening frame. Following UD's breather, Northeastern posted a 4-2 spurt to build a six-point advantage, 17-11. NU and Dayton traded points to the end, but NU's sizeable advantage and Armstrong's big swing at the end closed out a first-set triumph for the Huskies, 25-18.
Dayton responded big in the second set, never trailing thanks to Jill Loiars three kiss in the first five exchanges.
A pair of successful Bacon swats brought the early count to within one, 4-3, but the Flyers scored the next five points and maintained a sizeable advantage throughout the duration of the second frame.
In the middle portion of the second set, Fry and Gibeau teamed up for a pair of kills to whittle UD's lead down to three, 13-10. Dayton reset and attacked Northeastern heavily, winning the next six-of-seven points to grab hold of a 19-11 lead.
Tucker did everything she could following an NU timeout with three kills and an ace down the stretch, but the Flyers lead was too big as Dayton evened the match with a 25-18 second set triumph.
At the onset of the third stanza, Bacon gave the Huskies their first lead since the opening set with a strong kill, 2-1. But a couple NU errors turned the tide towards Dayton and the Flyers maintained the advantage to the end of the third set.
Isolde Hannan and Jenna Jendryk each threw down a kill and an ace, respectively, to set the third-set standard and give Dayton a 6-3 lead. The two teams traded blows down to the 11-8 spot in the match until a 4-1 Flyers' run put Dayton ahead, 15-9. Alaina Turner's kill made it 16-10 to give UD a six-point cushion.
Following a Turner ace to move Dayton's advantage to 21-16, NU head coach
Ken Nichols burned his first timeout of the match. The Flyers committed an unforced error on the next play, but claimed the next four-of-six exchanges to win the third set, 25-19.
The fourth set delivered a lot more back-and-forth action, especially in the beginning where the two squads traded points all the way down to the 4-4 mark. Turner and Shayne Brown each tallied kills to put UD ahead, 6-4. Tucker and Kurz joined forces for a pair of kills to knot it up again, 9-9, but Dayton attacked on the next four exchanges to force the Huskies into a timeout, trailing 13-9.
After the break, Bacon charged out and narrowed UD's gap to two, 13-11, with two big swings. Bredahl offered up an ace a few plays later to get to within a point, 14-13, and after a couple unforced errors on the Flyers' end, Armstrong leveled the count with a big kill, 16-16.
Armstrong and Kurz mixed in two more kills down the stretch, but Dayton mustered the other six points thanks to four kills by Campbell. The Huskies called for their final timeout, facing a 22-18 deficit. Tucker notched a kill after the timeout, but the Flyers won the next three-of-four points, capped by a Hannan and Loiars block. The Flyers' 25-20 fourth set victory cinched the match, 3-1.
Northeastern closes out the Dayton Invitational later this evening against Tulsa, starting at approximately 5 p.m.
