NU extends home-court win streak after victory over Harvard

Box Score
BOSTON—The Northeastern volleyball team extended its home-court winning streak to 22 after a 3-1 (14-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-18) victory over cross-town rival Harvard on Saturday night at Cabot Center.

Senior outside hitter Kelly Bacon notched a double-double with 17 kills and 14 digs. Freshman Jamie Bredahl skipped out on a triple-double, posting 23 assists, 16 digs, and nine kills. Senior Hanna Gibeau continues to impress, turning in a big performance of 14 kills.

Fourth-year setter Ina Kamenova marked a match-high 26 assists and an ace. Junior libero Natalia Skiba anchored the defense as always with a match-best 29 digs.

Northeastern took the board first with a Kurz kill to kick off the set, but neither team budged in the early goings. A swat from Bacon tied the set, 10-10, but errors plagued the Huskies' column, forcing head coach Ken Nichols to call for the first timeout of the match, trailing 14-10.

The Crimson maintained the lead, holding Northeastern to just four points for the remainder of the set. Bacon landed two kills down the stretch, but it was not enough to stop Harvard from taking a first-set victory, 25-14.

Another leadoff kill from Kurz and four consecutive swings from Bacon gave Northeastern an early 8-2 advantage and prompted Harvard to hail a quick breather. The timeout did not intimidate the Huskies as they pushed a 8-4 run to expand the gap, 14-7.

Strong offensive performances from Gibeau and Bredahl maintained NU's momentum down the stretch and preserved the lead for the rest of the frame. Gibeau highlighted the stanza with five kills to lead the Huskies to a 25-15 triumph.

NU took an early 3-1 lead after a pair of Bredahl kills sandwiched a Skiba ace. Both teams entered an offensive dual, tying the set seven times, until three Northeastern kills pressed Harvard into its first huddle, trailing 17-15.

The Huskies responded by throwing down a kill to add a single insurance point to their lead, upholding a 13-10 advantage.  Harvard called a timeout in a last ditch effort to even up the match, but Northeastern's lead was enough to seal the deal, 25-20.

The fourth frame stared similar to the third after both teams scrapped out to an 8-8 score. The Huskies broke the draw with a middle attack from Kurz, triggering a 4-1 run to force the Crimson into a timeout down three, 13-10. Northeastern was able to maintain its advantage through the middle portion of the frame before Harvard countered with a 6-2 run to even the set, 17-17.

The Crimson whistled for its second timeout of the stanza, but six Harvard errors closed the deal for the Huskies, 25-18.

The Huskies return to action with a 1 p.m. match against St. John's University tomorrow, Sept. 22. .
