CAA ReleaseBOSTON – The Northeastern Huskies put together a terrific performance in tough conditions on Saturday finishing second and fourth, respectively, at the Colonial Athletic Association's championship races at Franklin Park.
Veteran runners
Zachary Fraielli,
Zachary Krause, and
Stephen Sollowin paced the men, while
Lucy Young and
Jordan O'Dea were at the head of the pack for the women.
Despite cold temperatures and some rain, the Huskies shined in their 8k and 6k events. On the men's side, three runners finished in the top 12 overall. A top-12 finish for Fraielli, Krause and Sollowin means they have been named to the All-CAA team.
This is the second straight season Fraielli and Krause have earned All-CAA honors, while Sollowin has collected the accolade twice in the last three years.
Fraielli, a two-time CAA runner of the week, started fast from the get-go and never looked back. The senior took home a third-place finish, an improvement from seventh a year ago. He finished the 8k in 25:05.73.
Krause and Sollowin were just a few steps behind their NU counterpart, and were able to finish the event with times of 25:14.97 and 25:29.53, respectively.
Four other runners –
Christian Stafford,
Paul Duffey,
Ben Trapani, and
Charles Conway – all put together solid races, finishing in the top 19 overall.
Stafford and Duffey came in 13th and 14th with times of 25:29.53 and 25:41.03. The Huskies battled hard at the event and pushed one another throughout the race.
As a team, NU finished in second place for the second straight season with a score of 48.
William & Mary finished in first place overall with a score of 36, while Elon finished in third place scoring 85 as a team.
On the women's side, several Huskies flourished in the poor conditions.
Lucy Young crossed the finish line in second place, securing her third top-three finish of the 2014 season. She finished the 6k with a time of 20:57.78. This is the second straight season Young has earned an All-CAA accolade. In 2013, the then-freshman finished in sixth place.
Behind Young for the Huskies were O'Dea,
Madeline Bradford and
Kerri Ruffo.
This is O'Dea's first time being named to the All-CAA team. The sophomore took home 12th place overall, crossing the finish line in 21:45.50, while Bradford and Ruffo finished the 6k in 23:06.87 and 23:09.47, respectively. O'Dea's 12th place finish is three spots better than where she finished last year.
As a team, NU finished in fourth place with an overall score of 118. William & Mary claimed the top spot for the 20th time in program hisotry with a score of 35.
The Huskies now turn their attention to the NCAA Northeastern Regional Championships, which take place in the Bronx, New York, on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 10 a.m.
