SOCHI – Steve Langton '06 helped the US two-man bobsled earn its first Olympic medal since 1952 with a third-place finish on Monday at the Sanki Sliding Center.
Langton and teammate Steven Holcomb turned in a time of 3:46.27 over the course of four heats to place third behind the Russian duo of Alexander Zubkov and Alexey Voevoda (3:45.39) and the Swiss team of Beat Hefti and Alex Baumann (3:46.05).
Langton and Holcomb finished heats one and two Sunday with times of 56.34 and 56.84, respectively, to put them in position for a medal on Monday. The duo then turned in times of 56.41 and 56.68 in the final two heats to claim the bronze medal, Team USA's first medal in the two-man event since Stanley Benham and Patrick Martin won silver at the 1952 Olympics in Oslo, Norway.
It's the first Olympic medal for Langton and the eighth overall medal for Northeastern in Winter Olympic history.
Langton will have a shot at another medal in the four-man bobsled competition, which starts Saturday, Feb. 22 with heats one and two, before wrapping up with heats three and four on Sunday, Feb. 23. The United States won gold in the four-man bobsled at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver with Holcomb as a member of the team.Â
