BOSTON—In a full-squad meet, the Northeastern track and field teams closed out the Mark Young Invitational, hosted by Yale, with 25 top-10 finishes and a new program record on Saturday afternoon in New Haven, Conn. The meet brought together a range of regional schools, including Brown, Central Connecticut, Columbia, Dartmouth, LaSalle, Manhattan, Sacred Heart, UMass Lowell and the University of New Haven.
On the men's side, NU collected 109 total points for a second-place team finish, falling short of Dartmouth, who claimed the team title with 175.70 points. Brown tallied 99.5 points for the bronze finish, and Manhattan and Sacred Heart took fourth and fifth, respectively.
The Northeastern men were led by three individual titles including a first-place finish from the reigning 2013 Colonial Athletic Association Men's Cross Country Runner of the Year
Wesley Gallagher. The sophomore added 10 points to the overall score in the 1500-meter run with a New England qualifying and personal best mark of 3:44.60. Teammate
Stephen Sollowin also punched a ticket to the New England championships after collecting a third place finish in the same event, crossing at 3:44.30 for a new PB.
Zachary Krause led a quartet of Huskies in the 3000-meter steeplechase, earning the gold finish with a mark of 9:36.19.
Zachary Fraielli crossed next for NU and claimed second at 9:42.34, while
Patrick Cunningham and
Michael Flaherty took third and fourth, respectively.
In the field,
Jackson MacDonald took the last individual title in the long jump after clearing 6.78 meters.
Max Milder threw for 61.62 meters in the hammer throw for second place, while
Kevin Rosenberg added six points after a third-place finish in the shot put (16.14 meters).
The Northeastern women finished ninth with 25 points, while Dartmouth ran away with the team title with a 113.50 points.
Lucy Young, the reigning 2013 Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Year, led the squad after setting a new school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The freshman bested her PB by nearly 10 seconds, claiming second at 10:35.16. Classmate
Jordan O'Dea made her debut in the same event and crossed right behind in third place at 10:37.05 to hold the second-best time in program history. The duo tallied 14 points, collectively, and earned their way to the ECAC Championships.
The Huskies will enjoy a week rest before traveling to Philadelphia, Pa., for the Penn Relays on April 14.
