BOSTON -Â Following a 1-2 start to the 2014 season at the Radisson-UCF Invitational in Orlando, Florida, the Northeastern women's volleyball team will hit the road for its second weekend tournament of the year, this time at the 2014 Rose Hill Classic held at Fordham University in the Bronx, New York. The Huskies will play two matches on Friday against Rider (10:30 a.m.) and Fairleigh Dickinson (4:30 p.m.), and will wrap up tournament play Saturday with a match against host Fordham (1 p.m.).
Â
Radisson-UCF Invitational resultsThe resilience of the Huskies was tested on the very first day of the season, as the team was dealt the burden of playing from behind in both of its Friday matches. Northeastern pushed Eastern Kentucky to a fifth set after trailing 2-1, but fell short in the final frame (15-11) as the Colonels secured the tournament opener. Fortunes changed for the Huskies later that afternoon, this time stealing a five-set victory from Florida International after being down two games and 21-19 in the third. The momentum however was short-lived for the Huskies, who were tripped up by Central Florida in straight sets on Saturday.
Â
All-time against RiderA win Friday morning would be Northeastern's first ever against Rider, who owns a 2-0 all-time series lead. The two teams have not met on court since the 1995 season when the Broncs topped the Huskies 3-2 on Sept. 16 in a tournament at Rutgers. Rider was also a 3-1 victor over Northeastern the previous fall, taking the first meeting between the programs in a tournament match held at Princeton on Oct. 22, 1994.
Â
Broncs 2013 season recapIn his third season at Rider, head coach Christopher Feliciano led the Broncs to the most wins the program has seen since the 2004 season, finishing 15-14 (6-12 MAAC) and seventh place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Rider brings back 12 of 15 players from its 2013 squad, including its three top point scorers from last season in sophomore Kaitlyn Griffin (334.5 points), sophomore Ryan Ackermann (280.5), and senior Jaclyn Webber (258.5 points). Defensive specialist Alaina Pisczek also returns for her sophomore season, sporting a team-high 411 digs in 2013.
Â
All-time against Fairleigh DickinsonNortheastern has won three straight matches against Fairleigh Dickinson dating back to Oct. 19, 1991, when the Huskies flattened the Knights 3-0 in a tournament at Connecticut. Northeastern has only lost two sets to FDU in three all-time meetings, both coming in a 3-2 Husky win on Sept. 17, 1994. The Huskies cruised to a straight set victory on Aug. 26, 2011 over FDU as well.
Â
Knights 2013 season recapFairleigh Dickinson's 5-24 (3-11 NEC) campaign in 2013 was enough to grab a share of sixth place in the Northeast Conference, one spot better than where the team had finished the previous year. Seven Knights, including two starters, are back for the 2014 season, led by junior setter Allison Butler who led FDU with 702 assists (8.07 assists per set) and 176 digs last year.
Â
All-time against FordhamThe Huskies and Rams have split the two prior meetings between programs as NU looks to break the 1-1 all-time series tie with a win on Fordham's home floor Saturday afternoon. Northeastern took command of the all-time series with a 3-0 win over Fordham on Oct. 21, 1994, but the Rams claimed the most recent matchup in 2010, winning a grueling five-set match 3-2 on Aug. 27.
Â
Rams 2013 season recapFordham was one position shy of earning a spot in the 2013 Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament, as a 10-20 (3-11 A-10) record slotted them in a tie for seventh in the league. Lisa Hipp returns for her fifth season with the Rams, having led Fordham's offense last year with 332 kills while also racking up 257 digs and 29 blocks on the defensive end.
Â
Winless competitionRider (0-3) bumped heads with No. 5 Southern California on the west coast last weekend in a tournament at Pacific, and is still seeking its first winning set of the season, falling in straight sets in all of its first three matches. Fairleigh Dickinson (0-4) looks to throw its first win up on the board after dropping four straight matches in a tournament at Maryland Eastern Shore. Fordham (0-3) also hit a west coast road block last weekend, but swiped a set away from Georgia in a tournament at San Francisco.
Â
Hot under the Florida sunNortheastern setter
Jamie Bredahl turned up the heat at the 2014 Radisson-UCF Invitational in Orlando, Florida last weekend. The sophomore from Parker, Colorado snagged a triple-double and a career-high 37 assists against Eastern Kentucky, while her overall tournament marks of 74 assists, 29 digs, and 25 kills earned her a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
Â
Strong freshmen outingsNortheastern found great offensive production in two first-year players. Outside hitter
Brigitte Burcescu had at least 9 kills and 9 digs in two of the Huskies' three matches last week, while setter
Kristen Walding connected on 20 or more assists in back-to-back matches against Eastern Kentucky and Florida International.
Â
Down but not outThe Huskies' five-set comeback against Florida International was the first 0-2 comeback the team has had since stunning conference foe College of Charleston on the road on Nov. 10, 2013. Northeastern made three comebacks from 0-2 down during the entire 2013 season.
Â
Huskies block partyNortheastern's front row has done its fair share of blocking so far in 2014. As a team, the Huskies have tallied double-digit blocks two out of three times this year, and out-swatted their opponents collectively on the season 28.5-20.0. Sophomore
Caterina Rosander leads NU with 14 total blocks, while senior
Alexa Armstrong has stifled 10 attacks of her own.
Â
Away from CabotThis weekend's Rose Hill Classic will close out a six-match stand to start the 2014 season that Northeastern plays away from Cabot Center. It is the longest road trip the team has endured to open a season since 2010, when the Huskies played their first 10 matches on the road, going 6-4. Northeastern returns to Cabot for its 2014 home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 9, against Rhode Island at 7 p.m.
