SMITHFIELD, R.I. – For the second straight weekend, the Northeastern men's cross county team took first place overall, this time at the Shawn M. Nassaney Invitational in Smithfield, Rhode Island. The women finished the event third overall.
The Huskies have now taken first place at the Nassaney Invitational in back-to-back seasons. The teams competing at the invitational were crosstown rivals Boston College and Boston University, as well as Quinnipiac, Holy Cross, Hartford, Rhode Island, and Bryant.
On the men's side, it was senior
Zachary Fraielli who led the charge for the Huskies. The Providence, Rhode Island native showed off the improvements he's made over his career finishing the race first overall. Just a season ago, he took home third at the invitational and 16th in 2012. His time of 15:25.3 was 16 seconds ahead of his fellow competitors, and marked his first top overall finish at a cross country event. Fraielli was running at a pace of 4:57 per mile, the only competitor averaging less than five minutes per mile.
Behind Fraielli was teammate
John Schilkowsky who finished with a time of 15:41.3. Three more Huskies rounded out the top 10 of the 5k in
Christian Stafford,
Charles Conway and Jay Navin. Stafford took seventh, finishing the race in 16:00 minutes, Conway came in six seconds later for eighth, and Navin was two seconds behind him to take home ninth.
As a team, the men won the event with a score of 24. Boston University finished second scoring 61, and Holy Cross' score of 112 was good for third.
The women kicked off their race at 10:30 a.m. and were led by a familiar face in
Jordan O'Dea.
O'Dea paced the Huskies at the Nassaney Invitational in 2013, finishing the race sixth overall. This time, however, she finished the 5k in first place, crossing the finish line at 17:53.
Along with the sophomore, several Huskies showcased their early season prowess.
Lucy Young, competing in her first event of the season, finished the race third overall, clocking in at 18:12.0. The 2013 CAA Rookie of the Year finished just barely ahead of teammate
Kerri Ruffo who crossed the finish line at 18:12.7. Ruffo has finished in the top three in both events of her young career.
Corinne Myers and
Madeline Bradford finished 25th and 29th, respectively, with times of 19:24.2 and 19:35.3.
The women finished third overall with a score of 62 behind Boston University's 45 and Boston College's 61.
Northeastern now starts to prepare for the Battle In Beantown, a mere 20 days away. The Huskies will see familiar foes in Boston College and Boston University at the event.
