BOSTON – Northeastern men's ice hockey goaltender Clay Witt has been named as one of 20 candidates for the 2015 Senior CLASS award in collegiate hockey.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The complete list of candidates follows this release. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The 20 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists later in the season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2015 NCAA Men's Frozen Final Four in April.

Below are Witt's qualifications for the 2015 Senior CLASS award:
Classroom
Witt received his undergraduate degree in entrepreneurship and new venture management in May 2014 with a grade-point average of 2.733. He is currently enrolled in the graduate certificate program in project management and will complete his requirements for the certificate in the spring of 2015.

Character
After a record-breaking season as a junior in 2013-14, Clay Witt had the option of signing a professional contract and forgoing his final season of eligibility at Northeastern. Witt, however, wanted to complete his undergraduate degree and begin graduate courses, and he believed in the talent returning to his team in 2014-15, so he decided to come back to Northeastern for his final season. Witt's preparation, both mentally and physically, is second to none in the Northeastern locker room. As a student-athlete who leads by example, Witt was named one of the Northeastern assistant captains for the 2014-15 season.

Community
Witt, along with several members of the Northeastern hockey team, is heavily involved within the Boston community. He is a member of the Huskies' Leadership Team with Team IMPACT, an organization that pairs children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses with college athletic teams to improve their quality of life through the power of team. Witt and the Huskies are teammates with two brothers and have welcomed them into the Northeastern family since January of 2014. Witt also takes time to read to children in elementary schools in the Boston area during the hockey season.

Competition
In just his first season as the starting goaltender in 2013-14 Witt rewrote the Northeastern record book. He set single-season program records for goals against average (2.37) and save percentage (.932), and was named a finalist for the Mike Richter Award and a candidate for the Hobey Baker Award. Witt also was named a Hockey East Second Team All-Star as a junior, was a five-time Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honoree and earned the "Stop It" Goaltender of the Month Award in January of 2014. Entering the 2014-15 season, Witt is 20-17-3 with a 2.51 goals against average and a .928 save percentage to go along with four shutouts and 1,360 total saves in 48 career games (38 starts). He will be eligible for the Northeastern career record book after two appearances in 2014-15. During the summer, Witt was invited to attend the Tampa Bay Lightning Prospect Development Camp in his hometown of Brandon, Florida.

This season, Witt is 5-6-2 with a 2.75 goals against average and .909 save percentage, with most of his action coming after returning from an early season injury.

Witt and the Huskies are back in action this weekend with a two-game set against Notre Dame at Matthews Arena. Puck drop for both games is at 7 p.m.
