USTFCCCA ReleaseNEW ORLEANS – Following a 14th-place finish in the 800-meter run at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, Northeastern sophomore
Paul Duffey was named a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Second-Team All-American, the association announced on Tuesday, March 17.
The Hanson, Massachusetts, native picked up the accolade for his breakthrough performances this season in the 800-meter run.
Duffey was the first member of the team to compete at the Indoor Championships since Eric Jenkins did so during the 2012-13 season and also the first Husky to pick up a USTFCCCA All-America accolade since Jenkins received an honorable mention, also during the 2012-13 season.
The middle distance runner is in the midst of a breakout season for the program, collecting five first-place finishes in three different events so far. He kicked off his 2014-15 campaign by claiming the top spot in the mile at Boston University's season opener. The following week, at the Jay Carisella Invitational, the success continued for Duffey as he earned another first-place finish, this time in the 800-meters. Duffey would go on to claim first place at the Harvard Multi challenge in the 1000-meter run, and the Joe Donahue Games, finishing his mile well ahead of his competition.
His shining moment, however, would come at the John Thomas Terrier Classic when he broke the program record in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:48.02. At the NCAA Indoor Championships, his time of 1.50.83 earned him seventh in his heat and is the seventh fastest in program history.
Duffey and the Huskies are back in action this weekend when they head to Carolina, Puerto Rico, to compete at the Carolina Classic. The preview for the event can be found
