INDIANAPOLIS – Following a stellar indoor season, highlighted by multiple first-place finishes and new personal bests, sophomore middle distance runner Paul Duffey will head to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to compete in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field championships, the NCAA announced on Wednesday, March 4.

The Championships will take place from Friday, March 13 through Saturday, March 14.

"Paul's story is a great story," Director of Track and Field Cathrine Erickson said. "He approached us during his senior year in high school and asked if he could be on the team.  Our recruiting coordinator, Jack Brady, told him yes, if he could hit 1:55 in the 800-meter run. The next week he called and told us he dropped 3 seconds in his time and completed the 800-meters in 1:55.  At that point Paul earned a spot on the team.

"His freshman year he worked hard in training sessions, always did his best and did everything that Coach Matt Lonergan asked him to do, dropping another 3 seconds by the end of the year," Erickson continued. "This season, Paul adapted to a bigger training load while working with a new coach, Mark Rinker, who I brought in to specialize in the middle distances. Coach Rinker, who recently coached with the Oregon Track Club, a club that works with Nick Simmonds and many other professional and Olympic athletes, took over Paul's training in January. Obviously, this was a great move for the program and for Paul.

"Going from being a less than highly recruited athlete to a top 15 nationally ranked athlete is a true testament to Paul and to the program. We are putting the right pieces together for our student-athletes to represent Northeastern on a very big stage."

Duffey earned the 12th seed and will be competing against 15 others for the indoor title in the 800-meter run.

The 2014-15 indoor season has been one to remember for Duffey. He's taken home the top spot in five different meets this season, including the Jay Carisella Invitational, BU's season opener, and the Joe Donahue Games.

Duffey's brightest moment, however, happened just a few weeks ago, when he set a new program record in the 800-meters at the John Thomas Terrier Classic. The sophomore completed the event in a remarkable 1:48.02; the previous program best was a time of 1:48.81.

The Hanson, Massachusetts, native is the first Husky to qualify for the indoor championships since Eric Jenkins did so during the 2012-13 season.

ESPN3 will have a live stream of the Championships for fans hoping to catch the action.
