MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – In the bottom of the ninth inning with the bases loaded, Rob Fonseca delivered a game-winning single through the left side of the infield as No. 3 Northeastern walked off against No. 6 William & Mary, 3-2, during the Huskies' first game of the 2015 CAA Baseball Championship.

With the victory, NU advances to play No. 2 UNCW at 5 p.m. on Thursday afternoon in the winner's bracket semifinals. The winner between the Huskies and Seahawks will face the winner of tonight's 8:30 p.m. game between No. 1 College of Charleston and No. 4 Elon on Friday, May 22.

Left fielder Gabe Levanti went three-for-four from the plate and smacked two doubles, both hit down the left-field line. Pat Madigan, Maxwell Burt, and Fonseca each registered two hits during the morning game, while catcher Josh Treff helped move runners around the bases with two sacrifice hits.

Nick Berger allowed two runs on six hits during 5.1 innings of work as the Huskies' starter, walking three and striking out three as well. Sophomore Aaron Civale relieved Berger in the top of the sixth and threw 3.2 scoreless innings en route to picking up his seventh victory of the season (7-2). Northeastern (25-28, 14-10 CAA) has now won each of the last 12 games in which Civale has pitched.

Jason Inghram led William & Mary (22-29, 10-14 CAA) with six strikeouts during 8.1 innings on the mound for the Tribe, but was pulled in the ninth after NU had loaded the bases. Five different Tribe batters laid down successful sacrifice hits, including Matthew Tilley, who went two-for-three with an RBI.

Cullen Large opened the first inning with a single off Berger, and made his way to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Hall. Willie Shaw proceeded to single up the middle, scoring Hall from second and putting the Tribe ahead early, 1-0.

Cam Hanley and Madigan helped NU climb its way back into the ballgame in the second inning as the pair of Huskies rocked back-to-back, first-pitch singles to put two runners aboard. After Treff bunted Hanley and Madigan both up a base, Nolan Lang powered a fly ball to right field, deep enough for Hanley to score the tying run from third.

Northeastern charged back in front during the bottom of the fifth as Levanti and Burt hit consecutive doubles down the left-field line, giving the Huskies a 2-1 advantage.

The lead was short lived, however, as William & Mary responded with two singles in the top of the sixth that led to Berger's day ending early. With runners on the corners and one out, Josh Smith attempted to squeeze Devin White in from third, but Civale fielded the bunt and flipped to Treff, who applied the tag for the second out of the inning. During the next at-bat, Tilley hit an RBI single to right field, tying the game at 2-2.

NU put on a defensive clinic throughout the morning, turning three double plays by game's end. Burt made several clutch plays as the game went on, including a backwards, diving catch in the top of the fourth inning. He also made another diving stop in the top of the ninth that kept a ball in the infield, allowing Lang to tag a Tribe runner who had over-stepped third base.

With the game tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth, Levanti led off the inning with an infield single to third base, two batters before Michael Foster's bloop hit landed for a single in shallow center. With a 3-2 count, Keith Kelly took a pitch in the helmet that loaded the bases, bringing up Fonseca. William & Mary replaced Inghram on the mound in favor of Joseph Gaouette, who dealt two balls to Fonseca before the NU slugger smoked a single through the left side that scored Mason Koppens from third.
