Northeastern Tournament CentralÂ
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Riding
Dustin Hunt's no-hitter through five innings, the Northeastern baseball team carried a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning but was tripped up late by three James Madison runs as the Dukes walked off against the Huskies, 3-2, during Wednesday's first-round CAA tournament game.
Â
With the defeat, Northeastern (29-26) will move into the elimination ladder where the Huskies will play next on Wednesday, May 25, at 7 p.m. against the loser between No. 3 Elon (0-0) and No. 6 College of Charleston (0-0).
Â
Hunt pitched to the tune of seven strikeouts and four hits, walking two and allowing only one earned run. The six-foot-five junior lost his no-hit bid with one out in the bottom of the sixth on a ground ball that found a hole through the left side, but he recovered to keep James Madison (24-29) scoreless through six.
Â
Cam Hanley went two-for-three out of the cleanup spot in the NU order, reaching safely three times. Hanley was on base in the fourth inning when
Jake Farrell delivered a two-RBI single down the right-field line, sending the Huskies in front, 2-0.
Â
Fresh off his CAA Defensive Player of the Year selection, catcher
Josh Treff displayed his arm and threw out his 25th runner, Ky Parrott, stealing during the very first inning. Treff followed Hanley in the lineup and powered a double off the wall in left center during the top of the fourth that led to Farrell's two-RBI knock.
Â
Hanley, Treff, and Farrell, together combined for six of Northeastern's 11 hits, which amounted to be five more than the Dukes' total on Wednesday.
David Hopkins went two-for-four out of the lead off spot while
Charlie McConnell,
Mason Koppens, and
Cam Walsh each charted singles as well.
Â
McConnell helped the Huskies out of a handful of sticky situations at third base, picking off a JMU runner on a 5-3 double play in the bottom of the fourth. Hopkins showcased his defensive prowess too, easing
Tyler Robinson out of an eighth-inning jam with a nifty 4-6 double play at second base.
Â
NU threatened to add to its 2-0 lead in the seventh with the bases loaded, benefitting from singles by Koppens and Hopkins. After Madigan walked on a full count, Hanley popped up in foul territory along the left-field line, ending the rally.
Â
James Madison was finally able to dig into Hunt during the bottom of the seventh. Following Carroll's leadoff single, the Dukes managed to score their first run on an awkward defensive play by the Huskies. Hunt slipped on the mound while attempting to field a comebacker, but an ensuing errant throw by
Max Burt to third allowed JMU to bring a run home. Zach Tondi proceeded to hit an RBI single during the next at-bat, tying the game at 2-2.
Â
After Brett Johnson hit a first-pitch leadoff single off
Mike Fitzgerald in the bottom of the ninth, Kyle McPherson earned a five-pitch walk, two batters before Kyle Weston sent the game-winning hit through the left side.
