MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – On the brink of elimination from the 2016 CAA tournament, the Northeastern baseball team staved off an early trip home with the help of 14 combined strikeouts by
Aaron Civale and
Andrew Misiaszek as the Huskies shut out Elon, 3-0, Wednesday night at The Ballpark at Patriots Point.
Â
With the victory, NU advances to the tournament's Game 6, to be played on Thursday, May 26, at 7 p.m. The Huskies will meet the lower seed between the two losing teams from Thursday afternoon's winner's bracket semifinals (either No. 2 William & Mary, No. 4 James Madison, or No. 6 College of Charleston).
Â
Needing nine strikeouts to tie Adam Ottavino's single-season program record, Civale threw 10 on Wednesday night, finishing the evening with 121 on the 2016 campaign. The CAA Co-Pitcher of the Year improved to 9-3 and lowered his season ERA to 1.73, limiting Elon (25-29) to three hits and a walk during seven full innings on the mound.
Â
Andrew Misiaszek finished what Civale had started, allowing two hits during a scoreless eighth and ninth inning to secure the second save of his freshman season. Falling behind and facing two runners in scoring position with one out in the eighth, Misiaszek came back to strike out four batters in a row before Treff picked up the final groundout of the game.
Â
David Hopkins registered two hits for Northeastern (30-26), who became the fifth NU squad in the school's history to win 30 or more games. Hopkins and
Charlie McConnell cracked back-to-back RBI singles in the bottom of the fifth that provided Civale and the Huskies with a two-run cushion.
Â
Northeastern loaded the bases again the bottom of the eighth inning and scored an insurance run without recording a hit.
Cam Walsh received an RBI upon the Phoenix's Danny Crowe walking in a run that was ultimately charged to reliever Mason Daniels.
Â
Ryne Ogren and Nick Zammarelli both doubled and totaled four of Elon's five hits, while catcher Austin Leeney went one-for-three.
Â
McConnell and Farrell each stole a base for the Huskies, with McConnell nabbing his team-leading 26th stolen bag of the season.
