NEWARK, Del. – In a game that came down to the final minutes of action, 16
th ranked Delaware barely escaped the Northeastern field hockey team on Friday night at Rullo Stadium. Three different Northeastern seniors scored in the battle, including
Rachel Campbell who tallied at least one goal for the fifth-straight game.
Julia Gluyas made dramatic save after dramatic save against the Blue Hens, including one in the final minutes to keep it a one-goal game. The Huskies sent a flurry of shots at Lizzie Gaebel in the final minute of play, but were unable to tie up the game as Delaware was able to come away with the win.
After the Blue Hens quickly took a two goal lead with back-to-back goals in the ninth and 10
th minutes of action,
June Curry-Lindahl cut that lead in half in the 15
th minute with her 12
th goal of the season. After inserting the shot in, Curry-Lindahl snuck onto the turf and redirected
Ffion Thompson's shot high into the net to make it a 2-1 game, where it stayed at the half.
In the second half, the Huskies came out firing. First,
Laura MacLachlan made it a 2-2 game in the 42
nd minute and then Campbell put Northeastern on top 3-2 with a penalty corner goal of her own. In the 48
th minute.
After Thompson stepped up and at Delaware's penalty corner attempt, she cleared the ball out to Meg Barrett who fed it to Curry-Lindahl. There she dribbled down the left side of the field and found
Camille O'Conor as she entered the circle. O'Conor tried to send a pass across the circle, but it was deflected right into MacLachlan's stick for the score.
Campbell's goal was a typical Campbell goal as Barrett set her up perfectly just inside the circle where she fired it home past a bewildered Delaware goalie.
In the 63rd minute, after foul call that didn't seem like a foul call, Lotte de Koning quick restarted, dribbled into the circle and had lots of space, with everyone turned to the refs, to score the go-ahead goal and put Delaware up 4-3 in a shot that snuck just inside the left corner of the goal.
The regular season comes to an end on Sunday afternoon when the Huskies take on Drexel in Philly. The game is slated to start at Noon.
