Ken Nichols resigns as Northeastern women’s volleyball head coach

BOSTON -- Northeastern athletic director Jeff Konya announced on Thursday that Ken Nichols has resigned from his position as head coach of the women's volleyball program. Nichols recently completed his 19th year leading the Huskies, amassing an overall record of 330-247, including a 124-88 mark in CAA regular season play (3-10 in the CAA tournament).

"I would like to thank Ken for his nearly two decades of dedicated service to Northeastern University and the women's volleyball program," Konya said. "We wish him and his family the best in all of their future endeavors."

Nichols, the longest-tenured coach in program history, arrived at Northeastern in 2000 and posted winning seasons in 16 of his 19 years as head coach. He also navigated the volleyball program through its transition from the America East Conference to the Colonial Athletic Association.

Under Nichols' guidance, Northeastern advanced to conference postseason competition 14 times, including CAA quarterfinal appearances in each of the last three seasons. Nichols led the program to its only NCAA appearance in just his second season as head coach in 2001 after capturing the America East title.

"It has been the privilege of my professional career to serve this remarkable university for the last 19 seasons," Nichols said. "I am most appreciative of the efforts of all the incredible student-athletes over those years, both on the court and in the classroom."

A national search for Nichols' replacement will begin immediately.

"As Northeastern University continues its meteoric rise, our athletics department strives to match that trajectory," Konya said. "Our women's volleyball program plays a key role in our Athletics 2025 vision, and I look forward to finding the best fit for the program moving forward."
