Highlights
BROOKLINE, Mass. – Led by
Tyler Brown's masterful, seven-and-two-thirds innings of no-hit pitching, the Northeastern baseball team easily navigated past William & Mary on Friday afternoon at Friedman Diamond, pairing up runs during the fifth and sixth innings to top the Tribe, 4-0.
Â
After burning through 27 pitches during the first inning and walking two batters, Brown bounced back to deliver a gem of a performance for Northeastern (21-13, 7-3 CAA), keeping his no-hitter in tact until three batters into the eighth inning, when Ryan Hall dropped a two-out single into right field for William & Mary (15-24, 3-10 CAA).
Â
Brown, who exceeded 100 pitches thrown (109) for the second time this season during as many starts, struck out five batters along the way before the Huskies handed the keys over to
Andrew Misiaszek, who retired four batters in a row to secure his fourth save of the year.
Â
Together, Brown and Misiaszek combined to throw Northeastern's first one-hitter since April 29, 2012, when Kevin Ferguson had tossed a complete game one-hitter against Towson during the Huskies' 2-0 win at Friedman Diamond. Brown also joined teammate
Sean Mellen in becoming the second NU pitcher this season to come within four outs of throwing the program's first no-hitter since April 7, 2006 (Adam Ottavino); Mellen had done so on March 10 during Northeastern's 2-1 win at No. 17 Auburn.
Â
Rookie outfielder
Jeff Costello initiated the Huskies' first scoring inning during the bottom of the fifth, landing his first career extra-base hit in left field and easing into second base for a double.
John Mazza bunted Costello over to third base while
Mason Koppens followed with an RBI single to shallow right center that put Northeastern in front, 1-0.
Â
Koppens proceeded to steal second base and moved over to third base on
Charlie McConnell's right-side groundout, setting the stage for
Ian Fair to tap another RBI single up the middle as NU plated its second run.
Â
Northeastern mimicked its two-run fifth inning with another two-run frame against Bodie Sheehan, who allowed nine of the Huskies' 10 hits on Friday during his six-inning start.
Max Burt led off the inning with an infield single, then swiped second base for his sixth theft of the season.
Scott Holzwasser moved Burt over to third with his hard-hit single up the middle and stole second base as well before Mazza lifted a two-RBI base hit into left field, padding Northeastern's lead at 4-0.
Â
Mazza co-led the Huskies with two hits, joining
Jake Farrell, and was also one of Northeastern's four base stealers.
