BROOKLINE, Mass. – Sophomore left-hand ace Sean Mellen packaged eight commanding innings for the Northeastern baseball team while holding William & Mary to a run on three hits as the Huskies won a narrow, 2-1 ballgame on Sunday at Friedman Diamond to sweep the Tribe and post their fifth straight victory.

Mellen worked efficiently en route to collecting his ninth win of the season (9-1), striking out four batters despite also walking four. The NU ace opposed five batters during an inning just once (second inning) and allowed only one runner to advance beyond second base – Colin Lipke, who tripled to lead off the fourth inning and scored during Zach Pearson's ensuing RBI groundout to the right side.

Sunday's start marked Mellen's sixth quality start of the 2018 season and his eighth during which he allowed no more than one earned run.

Charlie McConnell went two-for-four and remained aggressive on the bases for Northeastern (23-13, 9-3 CAA), which is off to its second consecutive 9-3 start to conference play. McConnell legged out extra bags during two occasions: turning a routine single into a double during his first-inning at-bat and advancing from first to third on Chris Farrell's third-inning, run-producing wild pitch.

Mason Koppens cracked two hits out of the ninth spot in the Huskies' batting order, opening Northeastern's two-run third inning by beaming a double into left field. Koppens moved up 90 feet during McConnell's ensuing single and scored moments later on Farrell's wild pitch.

With Koppens already home and McConnell at third base, Jake Farrell punched a weak ground ball to the right side, scoring McConnell to give NU a 2-0 lead.

Jeff Costello and Ian Fair provided the remaining hits for Northeastern. Fair's 17-game hitting streak and 20-game on-base streak were both in jeopardy during his eighth-inning plate appearance until the NU designated hitter knocked the sixth pitch he saw from Jacob Haney through the right side of the infield for a one-out single.

Andrew Misiaszek navigated through William & Mary (15-26, 3-12 CAA) with ease during the ninth inning, securing his third save of the series and sixth of the season.
