HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. –
Ryan Solomon's solo home run during the top of the sixth inning on Friday broke the Northeastern baseball team's scoreless tie with Hofstra and backed
Tyler Brown's eight-strikeout shutout start as the Huskies went on to win their series opener against the Pride, 5-1, extending their winning streak to 11 consecutive games.
Â
Upon Solomon teeing off on his team leading, seventh home run of the year, the NU third baseman became the first earned run to appear on Hofstra starter John Rooney's season card during his previous 49 and one-third innings pitched. Rooney, who had entered Friday's game ranked third among NCAA Division I pitchers in ERA (0.85), surrendered a season high, seven hits, to Northeastern (29-13, 13-3 CAA), which in turn handed the lefty his first losing decision of the year.
Â
Brown outdueled Rooney during both players' seven innings on the mound, firing a career high, eight strikeouts, against Rooney's seven, walking none while limiting Hofstra (21-17, 10-9 CAA) to just six hits. Despite conceding a pair of doubles to Vito Friscia and Mikey Riesner, Brown never allowed the Pride to occupy third base as the Huskies' offense scored four runs in the wake of Solomon's homer, including three during the ninth inning.
Â
Charlie McConnell carried the first pitch of the game into left field for a leadoff single – one of his team high, three hits, during the afternoon. McConnell managed to escape a rundown upon being picked off during the next at-bat, advancing as far as third base, where he would remain during the final two outs of the inning.
Tyler White pegged a leadoff single off Brown to open the bottom of the third inning for Hofstra, but was caught flat-footed three pitches later as
Jake Farrell turned his second unassisted double play at first base during his last three games.
Â
With the bat in his hands, Farrell drove a double to left field to lead off the fourth inning for the Huskies and arrived at the plate during the top of the fifth inning with three NU ducks on the pond.
Jeff Costello and
Ian Fair had sandwiched walks around
John Mazza's sac bunt and McConnell's infield single to load the bases, but Farrell was unable to break the game's scoreless tie, fouling out to the left side.
Â
Northeastern scored its second run during its three-hit seventh inning. Mazza and McConnell stroked a pair of inning-opening base hits for the Huskies, previewing Fair's RBI single to right field that scored
Mason Koppens.
Â
Andrew Misiaszek relieved Brown at the start of the eighth inning and earned the final six outs of the game to earn his ninth save of the season, bringing him two saves away from tying
Mike Fitzgerald's single-season record (11). Misiaszek received three insurance runs during the Huskies' ninth inning, which featured Farrell's two-RBI double to right center.
Â
Northeastern's 11-game winning streak is tied for the third longest in program history, trailing its 20-game winning streak set during 1991 and its 12-game streak set during 1972. The Huskies have now won 18 of their last 21 CAA regular-season games, including an active streak of eight in a row.
