Huskies exit NCAA tourney with loss to NC State

RALEIGH, N.C. – Facing elimination from the 2018 NCAA tournament's Raleigh Regional, the third-seeded Northeastern baseball team posted eight hits on Saturday afternoon against the top-seeded host, North Carolina State (ranked No. 11 by the NCBWA), despite the Huskies coming up short against the Wolfpack, 9-3, at Doak Field at Dail Park.

After going three-for-five against second-seeded Auburn during Friday's regional opener, Charlie McConnell again led Northeastern (36-21) in hits, hitting a trio of singles against North Carolina State (41-17). McConnell, who was named the 2018 CAA Player of the Year, finished the season as the Huskies' leader in batting average (.347), hits (82), and stolen bases (37) – the latter two categories of which equate to single-season program records.

NC State left-hander Brian Brown struck out eight batters and walked none during his second complete game of the season (131 pitches).

Scott Holzwasser and Jeff Costello barreled a pair of solo home runs for the Huskies. Holzwasser put NU on the scoreboard during the bottom of the fourth inning with his sixth homer of the season, while Costello powered his first collegiate home run through the pouring rain during the bottom of the ninth inning.

Batting as the home team, Northeastern arrived at the plate during the bottom of the first inning already opposing a 2-0 deficit as the Wolfpack's Patrick Bailey had hit a two-run homer against NU starting pitcher David Stiehl. Bailey went on to swing a second home run against the Huskies during the top of the fifth inning en route to tallying five RBIs as NC State's cleanup man.

Despite earning the first two outs of the third inning, Stiehl was unable to close the door on the Wolfpack, who rallied for four runs. Bailey's five-pitch walk against Stiehl loaded the bases for NC State before Evan Edwards' fly ball to left field hugged the foul line, bouncing off the wall in fair territory and resulting in a three-RBI triple.

Brock Deatherage followed with an RBI single that put the Wolfpack in front, 6-0, sending the Huskies to the bullpen to retrieve Brandon Dufault.

After Bailey's three-run homer had put NC State ahead, 9-1, Northeastern showed signs of a comeback during the bottom of the fifth inning as Mason Koppens and McConnell sliced back-to-back, two-out singles to left field. However, the duo would advance no farther as Ian Fair grounded back to the pitcher's mound, ending the surge of momentum.

NU went hitless until the eighth inning, when Jake Farrell bounced a one-hopper under the glove of Brock Deatherage in right field, yielding three bases. The triple – Farrell's eighth of the year – moved him into a tie for the Northeastern single-season record with his head coach, Mike Glavine, who hit eight triples during his 1992 rookie season.

Andrew Misiaszek struck out four batters during three and one-third scoreless innings of relief.

Saturday's Raleigh Regional exit marks the end of a historic season for Northeastern, during which the Huskies posted a program record, 36 victories, won their second consecutive CAA regular-season championship, and earned the team's first at-large bid to the NCAA tournament since 1973.
