BOSTON -- For the second straight year, Northeastern men's hockey defenseman
Jeremy Davies and goaltender
Cayden Primeau have been named First-Team All-Stars, Hockey East announced on Wednesday. As the goaltender on the First Team, Primeau has also been named Stop it Goaltending Goaltender of the Year. It's the first time in team history that Northeastern has had multiple selections to the First Team in consecutive seasons.
The duo of Davies and Primeau have helped lead the Huskies to one of the most successful seasons in program history, one that includes a Beanpot Championship and 25 wins, tied for the most a Northeastern team has ever achieved. Having won their quarterfinal series versus Maine, the Huskies will have a chance to break that record when they face Boston University in the Hockey East semifinals on Friday at 4 p.m. at TD Garden.
The two First-Teamers have led the way for Northeastern's defense, one of the best in the nation. The Huskies are currently sixth in the NCAA in goals allowed per game at 2.03, the second-best mark in Hockey East behind Providence's 1.97. The Huskies also have the second-best penalty kill in Hockey East, holding opponents scoreless on 86.5% of their power play opportunities.
Davies is in the midst of his second-straight 30-point season, currently leading the team with 34 points from eight goals and 26 assists. The blueliner's 34 points are good for eighth in the nation among defenders, and second only to Player of the Year Cale Makar among those in Hockey East.
The returning All-American is one of the top power play producers in the nation, leading Hockey East defensemen with 19 power play points and 15 power play assists. Those numbers are also good for sixth and t-fifth, respectively, nationally among defenders.
Davies had a dominant month of February, when he was tied for second in the nation in scoring among all skaters with three goals and nine assists. For his efforts, Davies was named Hockey East Player of the Month and HCA National Player of the Month.
After an impressive freshman campaign, Primeau picked up right where he left off last season. The Voorhees, New Jersey native is currently tied for second on the all-time single-season wins list for Northeastern, accumulating a record of 23-9-1 so far this season. He has stopped 945 of the 1011 shots that have come his way this season, good for a 2.05 GAA and .935 save percentage. That save percentage is the second-best mark in the nation, and first in Hockey East.
Primeau showed his dominance in the Beanpot this season, stopping 59 of 62 shots en route to winning his second-straight Eberly Award and being named Tournament MVP as the Huskies repeated as Beanpot Champions. Primeau is the fourth Northeastern goaltender to win multiple Eberly Awards, and the first to win Beanpot MVP since Bruce Racine in 1988.
Primeau has filled up the award cabinet this season, adding the HEA Goaltender of the Year, a HEA Goaltender of the Month, HEA Player of the Week, two HEA Defensive Player of the Weeks, and the Hockey East Three Stars Award to his Eberly Award and Beanpot MVP. The sophomore has also been named a Hobey Baker Candidate and Walter Brown Semifinalist.
