CAA release
RICHMOND, Va. – Co-leading the Northeastern volleyball team through its undefeated weekend against Rhode Island, sophomores
Erica Staunton and
Kayla Martin have respectively been named the CAA Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference on Monday.
Â
Staunton averaged 4.38 kills per set while combining to swing .304 during the Huskies' consecutive four-set victories against the Rams. The NU outside hitter opened on Feb. 19 by notching her second career double-double (17 kills, 12 digs) prior to completing the series with her 18-kill showcase on Feb. 20 – a new four-set career high.
Â
On Friday at Cabot Center, Staunton helped Northeastern recover from its opening set defeat, landing seven of the Huskies' 16 second set kills that allowed NU to prevail, 25-23. In similar fashion on Saturday, she factored into four straight net points that broke the second set's 17-17 tie, later clinching the Huskies' match-tying, 25-18 victory with her two-point, kill-ace combination.
Â
From the back row, Martin was the defensive staple to Northeastern's first two wins of the 2020-21 season. The second-year libero averaged 5.63 digs per set across the weekend, passing eight assists while serving three aces.
Â
Martin tracked down 20 digs during the Huskies' home debut while committing a lone receive error, helping NU keep Rhode Island to the .134 attack percentage. On Saturday, she set a career high with 25 digs, delivering five assists while serving two of the team's nine aces.
Â
Staunton and Martin will look to keep Northeastern on its winning course on Thursday, Feb. 25, when the Huskies square off against Merrimack at Cabot Center. First serve is scheduled for 8 p.m.
